Do you wear expensive makeup everyday?

... or is it for special occasions only?

DP thinks I'm ridiculous for wearing MAC foundation everyday Hmm and should only wear it for special occasions.

MAC is one of the few foundations that I've been able to find a shade pale enough in. NARS has one too but that's even more expensive. All drugstore brands are too dark/orange for me. So I don't have much of a choice (Caspar the ghost over here) other than wearing a more expensive foundation. He then pointed out most of my makeup is expensive and I need to eventually replace it as it runs out, costing more £££.

Do you use expensive makeup everyday or use drugstore for things like work etc and expensive for special occasions?

Can I also ask what you wear on a day to day basis?
I wear:
MAC foundation
Lancôme mascara
Lancôme eyeliner
Urban Decay eyeshadow
Collection eyebrow kit
Benefit bronzer
Revolution highlighter
NYX setting spray
Either MAC or NYX lipstick

To be fair, until recently, I've just used drugstore but have changed to higher end makeup recently. Maybe DP is right, maybe I do spend too much on it? I don't buy loads of different things of the same product, for context I only have one eyeshadow palette, three lipsticks, one eyeliner etc, I don't have a massive collection but the things I do have are more expensive. Maybe I should just wear the expensive stuff for occasions etc?

TIA Smile

My make up is about the same as yours except I use Estée Lauder foundation. I don't bother with highlighter, eye shadow or liner every day but the others I always use. I changed from drugstore to more expensive stuff a year ago and won't go back

Every day. I think every day is 'special'; I own a tea set that was my Great Aunt's. It's in mint condition because it was a wedding present that was 'put away for best'. The fact that meant she barely ever used it makes me feel sad.

From a practical point of view most make up has a shelf life of 3-6 months, so you could keep things for 'best' only to find they'd separated/congealed/etc.

I wear:

  • Benefit concealer
  • Benefit brow zings
  • Bobbi brown cream eyeshadow
  • Estée Lauder eye pencil
  • Benefit They're Real mascara
  • Mac blusher
  • Benefit lip tint

I didn't quite realise how much Benefit I wear Blush

Probably the only difference with what I wear 'for best' is I would use primer and different, more dramatic eyeshadow.

Why is it his business?

Yes, I use Chanel foundation, Armani concealer, ysl eye shadow, Bobbi brown blusher , Lancôme mascara, Bobbi brown lipstick, and yes I use it every day I wear make up. I work and keep my own account from my husband, as well as my joint one, and he's never questioned how much my make up costs. If I couldn't afford it I would wear cheaper stuff.

Yes I wear expensive makeup every day. Now I am in my 40s the cheaper stuff just doesn't look good on me any more. My DH does not have the first idea of what I wear in the way of makeup or how much it costs! And really he wouldn't be able to recognise what was an expensive brand or not! If you have found makeup you are happy with then I would stick with it!

I wear brands that work for me. My go to every day is ysl touch eclat foundation with their primer underneath. I've just bought a new bronzer and it's nars. With Mascara I cut corners as I've found a loreal version which is a dupe for the lancome one and it's easier to remove etc. To be honest other products like lipstick blusher etc come from lots of places and I like to change it up.
Why is your dp questioning this?

Yes, I do. I wear

Charlotte Tilbury foundation
Urban Decay concealer
Nars blusher
Bobbi Brown eyeshadow
Clinique eye liner
Lancome mascara
Clinique or Marc Jacobs hippie

My DP has never, ever questioned what makeup I buy or how much. I don't understand why your DP is so interested?!?

I don't wear expensive make-up any day. Grin I don't really believe the expensive stuff is any much better. I have bought expensive stuff in the past but not noticed that it was any better (sophisticated packaging aside).

Tell him to mind his own beeswax!

And I don't wear any drugstore cosmetics as we don't have drugstores in the UK despite what beauty bloggers seem to think!

Well, it is your actual face, the thing that everyone you encounter sees every day, the thing you look at in the mirror several times a day... I'm sure he has "expensive" things he spends money on too...

I don't look at in that way - every day I use the products that suit me most at the time. There is no way I would use an inferior product just because it is cheaper. So for example I wouldn't consider buying any other tinted moisturiser except Laura Mercier. Buying cheaper alternatives is a false economy and would end up in bin.
I'm not a snob though in that I'm loving MUA products especially their black felt tip eyeliner - mistake and smudge proof - and their undress me highlighter is phenomenal.
My DH wouldn't have a clue what I use nor know how much it cost. But he knows that I have had years of insecurity with my skin with acne and rosacea so he would never question me re beauty spend.
Are you struggling financially to justify his comments?

I don't think things should be saved for best. It's also none of your dp's business!

Oh and a cheap Seventeen eyebrow pencil which is a nice cool brown.

Yes - if I have found a foundation that suits me, why would I want to look worse and wear something not as nice? Besides, foundations won't last for ever - once you've opened the nice stuff, it would just go off if you only used on special occasions.

thedevilinablackdress · 29/05/2017 16:03

Yep. Mostly expensive, some cheap. If I saved makeup for 'best' it'd go off or I'd go off it. Use with joy!
