How do I make my wavy hair nice?

This is my hair just after I washed it before I combed it. I would really like to be able to let it air dry and end up with nice waves but it never works out that way. It ends up bushy with no curl definition and feels awful so I mostly blow dry it straight.

What products and methods do I need to be using to get nice waves? Also what cut do I need to have?

You need to go sulphate free for hair products. Try deva curl or www.boucleme.co.uk

Try googling curly girl hair method for details on how to wash and style hair. You need to do things like apply gel to hair when dripping wet and not brushing it.


Lovely curls in your picture and if you are getting them naturally it will look amazing once you know how to care for curly hair

Number one thing is do not brush it when it is wet!!! Only use your fingers as a brush.

Don't use a normal towel, only use microfibre or an old cotton Tshirt.

I then twist each bit of hair around my finger to define the curl, spray a bit of this 21 benefits (heat protecting plus a load of other stuff) then I use a diffuser on the lowest setting. And when you do this don't touch the curls, just let the hairdryer do the work.

Yours has definitely got the potential to be gorgeous :)

Just use shapooo on roots and then use conditioner to wash the rest of the hair.

After you've applied your conditioner, don't wash it out. Your normal conditioner not the one you've used to cowash. if that's too scary, try just rinsing if off a little bit. Add gel to your still wet hair. Any cheapie gel is fine. Scrunch a bit. I like to brush gel thru with a large paddle brush as that clumps my hair into large, even waves. Then air dry or diffuse a bit for volume.

Should give you shine and defined waves.

yup agree with orangeraisons , look up the curly girl method
if you applied a curl girl sulphate and silicone free gel to your damp hair then it would dry like that without the frizz

sulphate dries out hair as well as straightening and heat

silicone will stop any moisture getting into the hair by sealing it so perpetuates the dryness

I use deva curl defining gel

Queen, brushing my wet curly hair is the key to good clumping for me. It needs lots of product on hair (gel and conditioner) and gives me really even curls with no frizz. I use a denman paddle brush. Know the denman is key to a couple if other curry girl styling methods e.g. Super soaker technique. Basically you just need a brush with plastic bristles that are widely spaced.

My hair looks very similar to yours - mine is maybe a smudge curlier.

Curly girl/sulphate free is a disaster to me - makes my hair floppy and tragic.

I need a really strong hold product. Current favourite is Matrix Biolage Curl Defining Elixir. I can use this and it holds the curl for about 5 days.

Tim I think it's done to hair type isn't it - mine sort of does what it's told, so if I brush it when it's wet it seems to straighten the curl out and no matter how much scrunching etc the curl doesn't come back. And that's what leads it to look frizzy but not curly and not straight either! Mine looks quite similar to the OP's when damp, OP you may need to experiment and see what works for you

Things that I have discovered work well with my fine wavy misbehaving hair:

• get a wide toothed comb for the shower and comb the conditioner through. This makes a startling difference
  
• use as little heat as possible and never straighten it
  
• sock bun overnight if I want to make it curl without washing again
  
• babyliss big hair if I need to look groomed (which is rare!)
  

Specific products don't seem to make a huge difference to my hair, I've tried many including a lot of the curly girl HGs. I do avoid silicone-based ingredients though as they dry my hair out.
