Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

----

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

---

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Like the thread title! Grin Unfortunately I'm working all 3 days of this long, beautiful weekend, so I shall not get to experience the lovely weather. Bah. I shall console myself with the thought of the sun damage I'm avoiding, a meagre consolation indeed.

I keep checking the Deciem site to see if the Vit C 23% is back in stock - I'll let you know as soon as it is! I think the Buffet serum is quite agreeing with my skin, & my Niacinamide-induced spot has nearly vanished - so glad I got the Baume B5 as it's cleared it up so quickly. Think I can probably try out the Retinoid soon (slightly scary).

I have a question - in terms of diet, does anyone eat / avoid anything specific, purely for its effect on skin health? And why? I'm not interested in weight loss diets etc (well I am but that's not what I'm asking). For example, I try to eat a couple of avocados per week, as they are a good source of vitamin E. Also, oily fish as it's supposed to be beneficial generally. I am trying to reduce simple sugars in my diet generally, I remember Bo said something about them being rather bad for the skin (actually I'd just like to get slim & stop my carb addiction...)

GrinGrin Love the title.

I'm still following you all, I've been holidaying, ill then ill again and completely crazy at work so I've just been lurking and catching up in a quiet moment. Weirdly through all of that, my skin is the best it's been in a long time. Clear and I'd just say even. No pigmentation marks, no spots. Hallelujah! Now I've shared this info watch it all go wrong tomorrow

Lego I don't know if you wanted to purchase from Deceim specifically but if not, Victoria Health had Vit C in stock yesterday, I've got some coming, finally! I've had to cut open the bottle, it's desperate times for Vit C atm.

I fucking love the title. And the intro post. I'm trying to practice gratitude atm. Today I'm grateful for this thread and what it has taught me. The intro post almost made me cry lol. I love this thread. Nicely done re summing up why Bo.

I felt pretty darned good in a maxi dress today. My fave one. It's lasted 6 years. I love a maxi dress. I know some of MN think it's impossible to look good in one, but I rock a well cut one 😀. Also, it's payday. My first proper one in 15 years. I love my new job. So much.

The thread title!! Shock Wink Grin

mint I find the the clarins drops slightly drying, definitely need to compensate with extra moisture when I use them.

Lego Sugar (or lack of) makes a difference for me - honestly I struggle to stick with it. We've recently switched to a more plant-based diet which means more nuts and avocados, I'm waiting for the skin benefits to kick in.

I wanted to ask, has anyone here done C25k? I'm only at the end of week three but really struggled today. Possibly the heat, possibly hormones. Any tips or words of wisdom would be really awesome.

JDSTER · 26/05/2017 22:02

I've been lurking the past few days and wholeheartedly agree with the changes made to the thread.

lego is it TO 2% retinoid you've got or 1% retinol? 2% nothing to be scared of- no dryness or irritation at all.

Update on LVL lashes - in a word - shit. I've got fairly long lashes that curl well with eyelash curlers and mascara. There just isn't enough lift at the root to have made it worth while so I won't be wasting my money on it again. The therapist is good at doing eyelash tint and my eyebrows so I dont think it's down to the therapist.
Innis no sebum loose powder is pretty good- tricky testing its ability to keep me shine free in this weather to be fair! It's very pale so I wouldn't recommend if you've got a bit of warmth to your skin.

dulci yes I've done C25K a few times (I'm a fair weather runner only). I'm not sure I have any words of wisdom but just that I've never found running particularly easy, even before I had kids and fitter than I am now. Hormones definitely influence my energy levels for cardio. You can always stick with the same week for another week, rather than moving on, that might be all you need.

Botemp Just popping back to say I have stopped using the exfoliator in the shower and I am currently using a honey-based cleanser until I get to the shops at the weekend, am cleansing separately as you recommend and I have already noticed the red undertones in my face have calmed a lot.

EnidButton I tried the Lancôme foundation and it wasn't great for my skin, as the day wore on it got quite patchy over my drier parts and kind of looked a bit mottled... But thank you for the recommendation and I am going to have a play in Boots tomorrow and see what I can find.

Botemp also, I completely understand your thoughts regarding the future of this thread and your role in providing advice. I have had a good look at the info sheets and am have been trying to find some different products which I can get started with and I am looking forward to picking up some supplies over the weekend. I will take a slow and steady approach as you recommend and will report back when I have got going. Thank you for providing all the info you have x

I've got three lovely new spots friends on my chin/cheek. The awful looking things have made a lovely diagonal spotty line which is very attractive Hmm (Obviously they are perfectly timed with my period). Have stuck some of the Cosrx pimple patches on and am hoping for the best in the morning. Does anyone else like seeing all the gunk those patches pull out? Grin

Well if we're going to express gratitude... I'm really hot today Grin Current blog working title: Hot Snails

Asos also has the Vit C 23% in stock, Lego.

In terms of diet, it's complex. Cutting back dairy is useful for some (insulin resistance and/or hormonal issues) but not for everyone. In general basically similar to what you're putting on your face:

Antioxidants- all the vitamins, A,B,C,D,E, etc. basically eat loads of varied fruit & veg (the more colourful and varied the better), complex carbs, etc. EV Olive Oil is loaded with antioxidants, I'm personally not all that convinced by coconut oil.

Anti-inflammatory foods- Nuts are a great source of zinc (especially almonds). Also means avoiding inflammation-inducing foods like refined sugar, alcohol, etc. which can include gluten or dairy if you are sensitive to that or have difficulty digesting it fully.

Omega 3- preferred sources are oily fish like mackerel, sardines, salmon, etc. but it's also in things like chia seeds, flax seed, sea vegetables, etc.

Probiotics- fermented foods, yoghurt, kefir, etc.

Hydration- just beneficial to general health to drink enough.

There's probably more but in a nutshell, a varied diet with a lot of fruit&veg, complex carbs, (cultured) dairy, nuts, lean protein, etc. Moderation with sugar and alcohol. Be careful with salt and if possible avoid processed foods.

I'm actually having first world induced guilt around avocados, I've always been quite smug about how wonderful it is for the environment that I don't eat meat but apparently, the carbon footprint on avocados is just as bad or worse than meat Shock

I honestly don't know if you can eat your way to healthy skin, the opposite is certainly true but then it's often the case that there's an allergy or intolerance at play that causes bodily inflammation that's also expressed in the skin.

Ehm I just started with running at 5k back when I still ran, Dulci, moved it up to 10k 5x a week quite quickly (at a reasonable pace) but I'm weird with exercise. Can do long distance very easily but I injure easily due to overproducing a hormone usually only seen in pregnant women that keeps the body extra flexible in anticipation to cb, I cycle now instead. I did recently start jump roping (sp?) 3x a week, 20 mins total, which I find brilliant. I've always wanted to integrate HIIT workouts but the whole stopping and starting thing just annoyed me, this works brilliantly as it's sort of the natural rhythm anyway, I don't need to go to a gym specifically for it and can travel with it easily.

Well, yes apols for not getting back to you sooner and using you as an example. Going by your pictures I'm still convinced you're not bone dry and more likely in the normal-combo range with dehydration. I was wondering if perhaps you've had a lot of sun damage in the past around the nose/cheek area. I have a bit of this from childhood (never burned except on the nose) and subsequently have the enlarged pores only in that area.

I know you were asking about specific products so I'd suggest the following:

La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser in the AM and as second cleanse in the PM if you wear heavy makeup otherwise as single cleanser in the PM should work fine for now. If you're truly dry you're probably better off simply splashing your face in the AM.

Moisturiser, if indeed you are truly dry, try LRP Toleriane Riche, otherwise the Eucerin UltraSenstive for normal to dry skin.

SPF- General starting point rec here is LRP Anthelios XL Fluide SPF50+

I suspect dehydration with you so I'd look into something like Hylamide SubQ Anti-Ageing Serum or The Ordinary Buffet. I'm not familiar with moisture bomb but if that's like an oil-free gel-like hydrating cream that could work in the interim too.

Introduce things gradually, yada yada, and once you're on your way we can discuss next steps.

bo jumping rope is the American (which seems to be what people learn in Europe and it drives me potty) or skipping is the British

I think I'm being dragged into a Park Run this weekend (that's 5k, right?), don't want to do it.

I can't do "clean" eating, avocados are deeply unappealing, I won't touch fish, I'm allergic to nuts and there more fussiness too. But I also had to cut down on some of the crap food because of the nut allergy too (cookies and muffins Sad). I fry stuff in olive oil and add it to pizza bases, does that count? Oh and no alcohol.

I read something about another trendy food, quinoa, the people who traditionally grow and eat it in Bolivia can't afford it anymore because people in western countries are buying it all up.

Well That's a shame. At least you didn't buy a full sized one.

Quick question everyone. Is there anything that can help clear up bruises? Has anyone ever tried arnica cream or is that just bollocks in a tube?

I bruise very very easily and have a whopper on my lower leg. It's now green and yellow so should hopefully start to go soon but I walked into the spare bed's metal frame earlier so they'll be another next to it tomorrow.

I've a feeling there's isn't as it's damage/blood under the skin but thought I'd ask. You never know. Smile

Vit C ordered! Thanks!

Dulcimena - I started the C25K a while ago but then had to stop due to a bad spell of migraines. Annoying. I can't imagine starting it in this weather... As soon as it cools down a bit I'm going to try again - was just about ready then the heatwave arrived. Also, I've always found hormones make a big difference to my ability to start a new exercise regime - I can't really achieve anything when I'm PMS-ish, or on the 1st couple of days of my period. After that, fine, & once I've got an established fitness routine, also fine.

Lego and JD I'm relieved that you both mentioned hormones. I've posted about the impact on my skin before, but for the first half of my cycle I have good muscular strength and stamina, second half is a different story. I practice yoga (2-3 classes of strong vinyasa p/wk) and the difference in what I can do at different times is clear.

Bo and pupsie I find skipping so boring! Fine as part of a hiit class or boxing training but I couldn't do it for 20 mins straight. Fair play if it works for you though.

otyt hope the park run went OK! Hope the heat and humidity has broken wherever you are. We've had electric storms and heavy rain overnight here and it feels so much fresher this morning.
