Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

Visible trainer socks. Or the pop sock ones worn with ballet pumps.

yousignup · 25/05/2017 06:52

Really? You shouldn't be able to see any sock with trainers at all?

Wearing crocs. Looking like youre going on a ten mile hike when you're just taking a kid to London
Not ironing things. Being the weird mumsnet anti make up person

CherylVole · 25/05/2017 06:56

Leggings. Any legging. Fuck no.

FunkinEll · 25/05/2017 06:56

Unless you are going to the gym. Then a bit of sock is ok.

Or if you're wearing socks to show deliberately but these have to be proper socks not trainer ones.

ememem84 · 25/05/2017 06:59

I was going to say leggings. But although I loath them, good quality black ones are fine. White/nude coloured ones? No.

Agree re socks. Either proper socks on show or no show socks.

No deliberately showing bra straps.

And if wearing pencil skirts tuck the top you're wearing with it in.

Crispsheets · 25/05/2017 07:04

VPLs.

FlyingSoloFlyingFree · 25/05/2017 07:09

Any form of sensible outdoorsy type sportswear - North Face jackets, those sports type sandals, trousers that zip off into shorts with multiple pockets, that sort of thing - worn for day to day life. Sorry but they just scream someone who's given up - or never cared in the first place.

WipsGlitter · 25/05/2017 07:09

Fleece with smart trousers, shoes and handbag.

Activewear when not at the gym.

Footsie socks on show.

Do you have a link to the article?

Notreallyhappy · 25/05/2017 07:10

Loved the cross comment... my ds 19 says they are total contraception as you wouldn't want to if your gf was wearing these.
Onesie or pyjama style trousers in public isn't a good look..imo.

Notreallyhappy · 25/05/2017 07:10

*croc comment.

HereBeFuckery · 25/05/2017 07:11

There's a woman who gets my train in the morning, who's like Captain Anti Fashion. She wears bunchy elasticated waist midi skirts, a la St Michaels of 1983, men's t-shirts, socks with crocs and a fishing hat. I am in awe of her total not-giving-a-shittery, she looks happy and confident.
However, she is the first thing I think of when I think of fashion faux pas.

Crispsheets · 25/05/2017 07:34

I think i know that woman

Ecclesiastes · 25/05/2017 07:35

Creases across your trouser legs where you've dried them on the airer in front of the Rayburn and not ironed them.

Dearohdeer · 25/05/2017 07:39

I'm really shocked at the trainer socks showing comment. I don't wear trainer socks but I thought they were pretty safe. What are you supposed to do?

MakingMerry · 25/05/2017 07:41

I think when it's the whole outfit like that HereBeFuckery it's not really a faux pas: it's not someone trying to be conventionally stylish but failing in one key element, it's someone playing to a completely different set of rules.

For me the little things are stickers being left on the bottom of shoes and the stitch being left in jackets.

yousignup · 25/05/2017 07:52

There's a stitch in jackets I need to remove? Seriously @MakingMerry, is this a thing?

OP posts:
ImperfectTents · 25/05/2017 07:54

God I still have the stitch in my interview suit jacket . I keep meaning to remove it but I am usually too occupied every time I get it out.

For me it's hair roots. Hence why I am growing my grey out. I can't stand the constant anxiety of the badger stripe

yousignup · 25/05/2017 07:56

What's this jacket stitch???
I haven't bought a new jacket for more than 10 years.

OP posts:
Batfurger · 25/05/2017 07:56

Only insecure people think makeup is compulsory. Maybe the woman on the train doesn't give a fuck. Must be quite empowering.

MakingMerry · 25/05/2017 07:59

Not all jackets yousignup but those with a vent at the back often have a cross-over stitch at the base of the vent when they are sold. This is to keep the jacket''s shape during transport. It's meant to be cut.

I don't wear make up ever (naturally beautiful of course :))
I do have a shocking lack of style though.

I'm pretty unstylish and probably flout at least half of the above but I do hate seeing hanger loops escaping from shoulders and necklines. Why don't people just cut them out?

ShatnersBassoon · 25/05/2017 08:00

Women who leave the 'Leather' tag on their handbag.
Men who leave the designer tag on their suit jacket sleeve.

yousignup · 25/05/2017 08:00

Well I never @MakingMerry. Just checked my limited collection of jackets and none are like that. Thank goodness, it would have been yet another style gaffe.
