Breton without stripes?

I have realised I really need to wear something other than striped Bretons in eight different colours in rotation. I do own some non stripy tops but I don't love them, because the shape and the weight aren't right - the cotton is too thin, the fabric too clingy, the neckline too low, or the body too short. So basically what I need is a Breton top - heavy ish cotton, reasonable length, slash neck, slim but not too fitted - only not stripy. I'll take long, short or elbow length sleeves and consider any colour as long as they fit the other criteria.

If you could point me in the direction of this elusive item I'd be ever so grateful.

Sounds like all you need is a boat neck T shirt in plain shades. Have a look at Boden Boatneck T, (but the fabric is thin) Jigsaw and even John Lewis.

Joules harbour tops. They're Bretons in various different patterns.

PollyPerky · 25/05/2017 08:00

They aren't plain though which is what the OP wants.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 25/05/2017 08:13

Thanks Polly but have already sent back Biden tips for being too thin/clingy (I'm sure they didn't used to be - the quality is v hit and miss now).

I need plain, Door but yes, that style and fabric (see also Seasalt sailor tops).

Following because I want the same! The Joules prints are not me at all - how hard is it to get a nice plain navy long sleeved tee with a decent shape??

Uniqlo is your friend here. If you aren't near a store, on line is good. Sizing can run a bit small, but I'm a 12 and choose Medium for close skim fit or L if I want a bit of air.

Second uniqlo. I've had some surprisingly robust/thick/non clingy t shirts and Breton type tops from primark. All plain coloured. They do loads of colours, I only have neutrals though.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 25/05/2017 09:27

Rhythm I love that top! Thank you. Now I just have to resist popping a couple more stripy things in the basket along with it.

Sock no Uniqlo store nearby - might take a punt though on your recommendation. Thanks!

😃 Glad you like it...was going to suggest you have a look at the Petit Bateau website too as a follow-up (bit dearer but lovely and sale is often good)...but the temptation of the stripey things might be overwhelming there.

I feel your pain. I am trying to wean myself off a constant rotation of breton dresses (boat neck, 3/4 sleeve, a-line mini) in various colours. Have worn virtually nothing else for the last 4 years it seems. They even have pockets.

OCSockOrphanage · 25/05/2017 15:51

Rhythm, I may have bought that top too! You should call them and let them reward you for the publicity. Hmm, I hope they have enough stock for us all.

VintagePerfumista · 25/05/2017 17:14

I may be about to buy that top too. How fab is that?

Thank you Rhythm- what a fab site!

(also have 7 Bretons and panic when they're all on the washing line as I don't know what to wear in this weather and long sleeve thick Ts are not the right shape generally)

OCSockOrphanage · 25/05/2017 17:56

Vintage, we should stop following each other around!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 25/05/2017 19:28

When I had a nosey around that website I discovered that they were the very first company I ever bought a Breton from, back in the late 80s/early 90s when they only did mail order and advertised in the Independent on Sunday! So very happy to discover they still exist and will keep an eye out for other navy boat neck wearing Mumsnetters.

Oh I just bought it too - thanks Rhythm! If I see someone else wearing it I'll know it's one of you guys!

SapphireStrange · 26/05/2017 13:00

Gap? They have a lot of stripy ones but some solid ones too. And good and frequent sales/promotions (40% off full-price items at the mo).
