Plus size wedding guest outfit

I'm currently a size 18-20 (5ft 5) and am apple shaped. I'm about as un-style and fashion conscious as possible and usually just go for comfortable, and almost always black clothes. I'd be super grateful for any help chosing an outfit for a forthcoming wedding.

I couldn't wear anything with bare upper arms/shoulders/above knee and would like to be as inconspicuous as possible. I'm also not keen to break the bank as it'll be a one off outfit.

Tried some stuff on in M&S today and I looked more like the marquee than a guest! I see stylish plus size women all the time and have no idea how they do it. Any help much appreciated, thanks.

What about the Marianne dress and jacket from Lindy Bop in navy? I have this and it's really stylish and you can wear it afterwards.

Thank you so much - lovely dresses. I'm starting to feel a bit more positive about it all (although still worried that my wobbly bits could render the loveliest dress hideous!) I guess I'm best ordering a few and trying them on. Also any suggestions for cover up/cardi type things for dresses that don't include them? Thanks again

Op asos sizing can be a bit weird sometimes ime, so be prepared to send stuff back if you order from there. Their returns system is good though.

Thanks eveyone - this has been a huge help. I'm going to mail order a selection and my eldest DD (20, slim, beautiful and stylish - yes I might be biased but, even so) is going to be coming to stay for a few days so I'll get her to help me with final decisions.

Longer term I'm going to try to motivate myself with some weight loss to help my confidence a little. Like I say though, I always think other plus size women manage to look great so not sure why I find it so hard!!

I am same size and shape just 1 inch lower than you! Just don't wear black at the wedding. It has been said before on these pages but I really think it is one occasion when you should not wear black. I loved that silver dress and some of the navy dresses shown. However if you are like me you probably do not want a high neck.

Last wedding I went to my clothing was a disaster! I cannot believe I did not try the dress on until the actual day! It was a high necked dress and the neckline was irritating me, and the bloody zip would not go up all the way. It was piggin' hot and I had to keep the white linen blazer on all the time. Whatever possed me I do not know! Also my shoes were a bit too narrow and I was not walking right in them. Jeez!

Can anyone tell me how the sizing comes up on the Lindybop site? In a very similar position to OP, though I'm a bit taller and I don't particularly care about being inconspicuous colour wise - I'm sitting here in a bright yellow top :o

I look better in trousers than dresses - being an apple shape isn't really suited to dresses I don't think Sad People say their weddings are "informal" but you know they'd be unimpressed if you turned up in your favourite M&S jeans look jeggings and a nice top, grumble, grumble :o

Your post could have been written by me last week- size etc (and lack of confidence) identical.

I bought a few dresses and tried them on. The Lindy bop ones were both nice, but this was very flattering one

Lindy bop

I am sure it must come in other colours (this is much brighter than I would usually choose, but I am trying to roll with it as I am sick of hiding in the corner.

I am an 18/20 and the 20 Lindy bop was great- not too tight and both had a way to tie in at the waist so probably better to go for the larger if you are unsure and tie in.

I have another question - what do you larger apple shapes do about tights? I hate dresses mainly because of tights, thinking about it! They never stay up!

Any tights tips? Some brand I've never discovered that actually stay up for a full, long, active day on an 18-20 apple shape?

Thanks Just

Its not finding tights for sale in bigger/ the right sizes that is the problem really, its the fact they don't stay up, and there is no way of knowing whether a pair will stay up all day until you've had them on a few hours. Although default assumption is they won't, as they never do unless worn mainly to sit about and not to walk around much!

I'm thinking of suspender belt and stockings - not to be sexy but to be sure they will stay up and avoid the realisation my tights are slipping down as I walk after having had them on for a few hours!
