Would you/have you asked a complete stranger where they got an item of clothing?

I was following a couple down the street and could not stop staring at her outfit, especially her top. But I didn't ask her where it was from, though would've liked to, because she was really glam and stylish and groomed and I was looking decidedly scruffy!
Would you/do you?

Yes twice, i literally couldnt help myself, both people were fine about it.
One was awesome leopard print shoes that she had got that morning from dune and I managed to get a pair and the other was a dress the lady had got a year before but I managed to find it on eBay a size too small and lost weight to fit into it :)
I HAD to have them.

I've done it a few times, and the response has always been friendly and helpful.

I've done it before, and had people ask me too! I find it flattering that someone would like something I was wearing so much they had to stop me and ask where it was from Smile

What's the worst that could happen?

Yes, often, and have had it happen to me many times, as well as random compliments on my hair.

Yes, and I've been asked myself. Invariably, whether I was the asker or the askee, the item of clothing was over ten years old/bought in another country/borrowed from someone else.

I can't remember doing so, but once I (and dd) loved an unusual plait in a child's hair so much I asked the parent how it was done. She then demonstrated on my daughter's hair, and I learnt how to do it for her!

I do this, no issue. A lady behind me in the check out line this afternoon asked where my jacket was from and then the lady on the till asked the same about my bag.

MelanieCheeks nothing really! Just dithered too long then she was gone! I think it was because I was behind her walking down the street it was difficult to approach without accosting her Grin
I think if we'd been wandering around a shop or standing in a queue I would've done.
Thanks for all the replies

Yes I have. I have also been asked about where I bought my pink shoes! Grin

A trendy young teenager once asked where I got my boots from. When I said Asda she sort of looked a bit disgusted Grin

I haven't but I've been asked myself quite a few times, I always take it as a nice compliment.

I've been asked a few times. I take it as a compliment, too.

Yes I've asked, and been asked. I find it flattering if I'm asked (unless it's by the polar opposite of me style-wise!)

It makes my day when someone asks me so I always pay the compliment forward and ask other people!

I've been asked quite a few times. Most frequently by slightly tipsy women in the ladies.

I've never been offended by being asked where something is from, although I don't like it when people ask the cost.

I've had people ask me where I've got shoes from.

I've been asked, but never actually asked someone myself - as close as I've been to it!

I've never asked anyone else, but I've been asked by people. I take it as a compliment. Recently a lady asked where my biker boots were from. She was in her 70's and dressed like a grungy student!

Once in a pub toilet a woman said her equally drunk scarey looking mate wanted a word with me. .
She wanted to know where I got my shoes from. . .
Felt like just giving her them!!
But was a compliment even of she had my legs shaking!!

I have both asked people and been asked and the answer both ways is usually 'eBay/charity shop/somewhere abroad / had it for 10 years. Ah well, it's always a nice chat anyway.

Yes I always compliment them & ask them where they got it. Once had a girl say she got a top from a little boutique in Barcelona, only to discover the exact top in Topshop!

I do so often. I always love to be asked where I got something from - such a compliment. And I have only ever had a good reaction from the people I have asked in return :)

It's just a lovely polite compliment. You look great, where did you find it? When it happens to me, it makes my day. And I hope, when I do the same to some unsuspecting woman, that it gives her a lift too.

I do it alot . Especially if I've had a drink!
People ask me sometimes too. Usually if someone says they like something I'm wearing I just blurt out where I got it. Or that it's got pockets. I love things with pockets 🙈
