Does anyone know where I can find good quality but reasonably priced trousers for a really long legged boy? My son is 17 and fairly fashion conscious. He is only 5 10" but has a 38" inside leg. I've looked on the usual sites for tall men but they only start at a 34 waistband and my son is only a 28 . I'm at my wits end!

Casual or smart? Next men go down to very small waists in their longer legs

River Island do them online. My son is tall and v skinny so gets 26" waist and 32 length. Instore they do 28" waist.

Have a look on ASOS, their main demographic is lanky hipster men with small waists, they tend to have lots of different sizes too.

My DS is similar -6 ft 1 with a 28 in waist, and most of the height is leg. His current jeans/trousers are from H&M and Levis. We had to buy him a suit recently and hit jackpot in the sale at a Jaeger outlet store; they bring out all the weird sizes in the sale.

Try T K Max. They do online but you may have more luck if you can visit a large branch. Lots of the designer wear comes up quite small so worth looking at the 29 inch and possibly 30 inch waist. We also bought some nice suits from French Connection, although I think DS's inside leg was not quite so long (but recognise the difficulties of a 28 inch waist). Once he has a 30 inch waist, Boden do unfinished trousers, or will hem to your requirements. Also, if you have time, you can find some gems on ebay. I bought a great new dinner suit for about £25 and the guy also sent a marching new shirt. He had bought it for an event and then expanded!

My boys legs aren't quite as long. I can usually find small waists with long legs in hollister, abercrombie, and american eagle. They might only go up to 36 leg but its worth a look. Failing that, an alterations place might be able to get an extra inch or so by letting the hems down

My experience - 26" waist and 36" inside leg needed - is that the 'younger' the shop, the better the fit for lanky boys, even when the measurements are the same.

The very cheap shops - H&M, Primark - tend not to have the extreme sizes BUT they cut out of as little material as possible to reduce cost, so are also worth a look: DS had some great jeans from Primark that were meant to have a 30" waist and normal width legs, but in fact fitted him snugly!

Burton / Topshop are our current haunts of choice. They don't have clothes LABELLED his size, but he can get away with a 30" waist, even 32" in a few styles, and those get him a couple of extra inches in the leg. Order online to try on in store.

I do wish that more places sold trousers like cricket trousers - buy by waist size, turn up to fit!
