If you suffer from rosacea...

If you suffer from rosacea, please share with me your skin care routine and products. I've suffered since the birth of my second child 4 years ago and whilst it's never been great, I've managed to control it fairly well with medication and (inexpensive) sensitive skin products. Over the last few months however it's gotten progressively worse and I've decided that I need to invest in some really good skincare products and a new skin routine (before I go back to my GP). I'm at the end of my tether with it so any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated Flowers

To be honest I would just go back to your GP. Soolantra really helps any breakouts.

Cosmetically though the thing that made the biggest difference was ditching foaming cleanser and anything abrasive on my skin such as a cloth or cleansing scrub.

Now, I clean and moisturise with cetaphil, and wear a good factor 50 SPF everyday reapplying regularly. I am too scared to put any other kind of product on but I do wear makeup.

I had Rosacia for a couple of years - pustules, red discolouration etc. and tried all sorts. Stopped it with Jan Marini hydroglycolic products. Had a Jan Marini acid facial and have been using follow up products ever since. Sometimes I think I am cured and stop using it and the redness comes back in a couple of months.

Wish I had good advice. I tried everything from tea tree oil, to micellar water to cutting sugar out of my diet for the past 4 years, only to have flare ups return repeatedly, and much worse each time. I finally admitted defeat and sought help from the GP who put me on metrogel (which was no help). My spots on my chin and face have almost cleared up after an 8 week course of tetracycline. My nose is still a mess, showing signs of scarring from rhinophyma which I've been referred to a dermotologist to sort out (hopefully).

Bottom line, I think the more you try to self-treat, the worse it can get. Just go to the gp.

Get rosacea at times of bad stress. I manage it by cutting out sugar and alcohol as soon as it flares, then using a clay based cleanser (Esse refining cleanser) and Liquid Gold (glycolic). Glycolic acid works really well for some people but makes it worse for others.

My skincare routine usually is this:

Cleanser- Konjac sponge and water (I use a little bit of a cleansing lotion as well if I need to take off make-up or sunscreen- using Esse probiotic cleansing milk just now, but really just anything simple that's not drying)
Serum- I look for an aloe based one with hyaluronic acid- currently alternate between Apivita moisturising serum and Absolution serum anti-soif.
Toner/hydrating mist- Turbliss or just rose water
Moisturizer- either a blend of rose hip and jojoba oil or Lily Lolo day cream.

I avoid anything with shea butter in it like the plague, ditto cocoa butter. Anything that blocks pores seem to set the rosacea off quick smart.

Once a week I do a three step deep treatment. It consists of
Step 1 Bravura salicylic peel for 30 minutes to clean out pores
Step 2 Turbliss peat mask for 5-10 minutes ( mist it with rose water to stop it drying out every few minutes)
Step 3 Chinata moisturizing mask for 20 minutes (it has squalane derived from olive oil in it, very moisturising)

Once a week ( a few days after the three step facial), I do a quick facial in the bath
Step 1 Esse microderm exfoliator (it's a clay based deep cleanser) takes a minute followed
Step 2 Esse cream Mask- 5 minutes as I lay back in the bath. I'm using a lot of Esse just now as I got a trial set, but really the principle is something clay based followed by something moisturizing. The Esse stuff is good but not earth shattering.

But I do think a simple daily routine with gentle and light products combined with a deeper clean and deeper moisturise every few days works well for me.

I would definitely go back to GP. I was spending a fortune on La Roche Posay products etc but GP prescribed azeliac cream which has worked wonders. I have rosacea on my cheeks but one side it worse than the other. Really read and sore, feels like it's on fire!

My routine;

am: wash with cetaphil gentle cleanser, Avene Antirougeutrs moisturiser. Then make up which is Estée Lauder double wear light on base.

pm: I use whatever micellar water is on offer, usually Garnier, to remove make up, wash with Cetaphil gentle cleanser, usually twice. Then apply azeliac cream.

Every now and then when I'm spending a day at home, usually once per week, I cover my face in Cetaphil moisturiser which helps to soothe plus now that the rosacea is under control I have the odd night where I don't apply the azeliac cream and just cover my face in moisturiser for bed.

Before I'd been using all sorts on my face and probably caused the problem in the first place Hmm

Soolantra from the GP. Made the biggest difference of anything I've ever tried, apart from tetracycline tablets, but I really didn't want to be on those longterm. I'm down to one or two small spots a month, usually on my nose, and I just zap those with azeliac acid cream and they're manageable.

Other than that, a gentle cleanser taken off with a flannel, a 2% BHA lotion (at night), and moisturiser with an SPF during the day (winter) or Ultrasun SPF30 (summer), then Paula's Choice serum/moisturiser at night.

Thanks for saying your replies. You've convinced me to go back to my GP sooner rather than later. Flowers to all my fellow sufferers - it's bloody miserable isn't it!

Another vote here for cetaphil cleanser (it's relatively cheap, seems to help & allows me to spend more on other products) and soolantra from GP (helped particularly with specific spots). I also learned a lot from watching the youtube videos of dr sam bunting (a dermatologist in London). Finally a few years ago I had IPL (light treatment via a dermatological nurse - I'd be really careful you/what clinic to have it with) but it did make a biggish difference on one problem area. I haven't needed it again, probably because of the other changes I made as above. Plus F50 sunscreen (I use heliocare, but Im sure there's others). And (finally again) la roche posay moisturiser for when my skin needs a little more tlc. And reducing alcohol (although that might be because I take better care of my skin when I've not stayed up too late drinking wine & talking/watching netflix Smile

Very strong antibiotics from the dentist for a gum infection sorted my roseaca out. Only a mild redness now.
