Balayage on dark brown hair? (Pic)

Please excuse the terrible selfie! My hair is long, quite fine and dark brown with a very slight reddish tint. I haven't coloured it in probably about 10 years but I'm so bored of it...

What do you think about balayage on dark brown hair? Would it ruin my fairly shiny hair? Would it look more volumised? I need a style intervention in general but am starting from the top down!

I'm sure it would look nice. Make sure you deep condition your hair after though as the bleach will dry it out.

Do you live near London? These two pics are from a London salon on brunette hair.

Thanks for replying! No, I'm nowhere near London but I'd love to have hair like that!

Is it basically a perm

I went from very dark brown to a blondey balayage, and I love it. Just make sure you go to a great hairdresser that is skilled in balayage, I made mistake of taking a cheapie option first of all, and had to go £££ to get it fixed. I'd never go back now, love having expensive hair (even if that means I can only afford it to be done every six months or so 😂)

There are loads of pics on pinterest - show the ones you like best to your hairdresser, they would need to bleach sections of your hair to achieve the look you want.

At the moment I have a sombre rather than ombre look which is softer and I'm thinking of going for a more sunkissed look next time now that its Spring.

I have dark brown hair with Balayage. It will change the condition of your hair because they will use bleach and then tone it. That means the colour will get lighter as the weeks go by.

It also looks far better on curled hair than straight hair and similarly layers make it look better.

I can recommend a salon in Newcastle if you are anywhere near

Great thanks for all that! My hair is usually in beachy waves with a few more layers than I have now...I don't want a full-on ombre, just a slightly more than 'sunkissed' look...maybe a caramel tone would be better? newtssuitcase is the condition of your hair much worse now? I don't want to wreck my hair completely, just change it up a bit!

janknitti I'm in France! Plenty of dodgy salons round here but I've got a couple of recommendations ☺

My hair was very glossy and in very good condition.

Its now in not as good condition on the lighter bits and is splitting a bit. But it isn't horrible. My colours are caramels on dark brown but as each week goes by it gets lighter. I will make an appointment for just a toner in a couple of weeks' time.

ooh Janknitti - if you could make your Newcastle recommendation that would be fab - I'm in Durham and am starting to think about how to manage the growing elements of white/gray hairs - my original colour is very close to black though so don't want it to look a mess!
