What do you do when you start to go grey?

I've found about 15 hairs I assume I should start to dye my hair now? I've never ever used hair dye before, which at-home kits are good? I have sensitive skin too so always stayed clear of dying hair as never been sure what to use. Any advice appreciated ladies!! Xxx

I have medium brown hair.
I have highlights - half a head, not too blonde and this disguises them nicely.

Why assume you should start to dye your hair, unless you actually want to?

Leave your hair alone if you have 15 white hairs, such a low number, leave them alone.

Nothing - why assume it's even an issue? Confused

Embrace it!

Most of my greys are on one side of my head, so if I part my hair one way they're barely visible, whereas if I part my hair a different way it emphasises them. If my hair is loose I prefer to part it so that the grey colour is less visible, but when I put it up I like to part it so that the greyer locks become a visible swirl - an elegant silver feature.

15 grey hairs aren't going to be noticed by anyone except you!

And you don't have to do anything....there's no 'should'. If you want to dye it go for it, if you don't then don't.

I do dye mine (I'm only 34 but many more than 15 greys) at the hairdressers but I've heard L'Oréal is very good for 'DIY'

I assume I should start to dye my hair now?

There aren't any actual rules you know. What do you want to do?

Same issue here, DP helpfully says it would be career suicide to go grey. Only a few at my temples so far which you can't see if my hair is down (rare) but can see if its in a pony tail.

Career suicide? What do you do for a living? Confused

OP - I'm in the same boat. Actually love my natural hair colour, never dyed it, couldn't be arsed even if I'd wanted it a different colour. Now it's going white (a LOT more than 15 hairs, I might add!) and I still couldn't be arsed with the time and expense of dying it. Don't worry about it for 15 hairs, but think about whether, long term, you want to commit to the upkeep of a dye-job.

I suppose I'm just thinking 'it's gonna get more and more' I know it's major shallow but I don't want to be grey... just yet. Ha!

I stopped dyeing my hair when I started going grey, I had previously been purple or red or blue. I refused to join the treadmill of covering white roots every 4 weeks, I thought I would embrace the silver fox look Smile

10 years later I am still brown with a few grey hairs.

I dye my hair, I didn't count the greys though so unsure of when. I use nice and easy light natural brown, as it's fairly close to my own hair colour and doesn't have the red tinges many brown hair dyes do. You could start off with a semi permanent, that's what I did, and see what it's like.

Ps they always work out darker than they say on the box, so go a shade lighter.

Career suicide Shock! Fgs, what kind of ageist job is that then?! And presumably sexist - men don't seem to be expected to dye their hair unless they are actors or something.

Not all grey hair looks the same. Some of us like what we have, others don't. I don't see how you can possibly tell from 15 hairs how yours is going to turn out. Why not wait and see before embarking on a palava that's going to be time consuming, possibly ruinously expensive and from which, once you've committed, it can be very hard to row back?

And that's without even talking about sensitive skin.

I find it weird on here sometimes.

If the OP had asked What do you do when you start to see a few wrinkles? I recon there'd be recommendations for decent skin creams and very few posts saying do nothing and just embrace the aging process.

Should doesn't come into it.

Dye your hair if you really want to step on that treadmill. Don't if you don't.

Report
Footle · 27/02/2017 09:38

I haven't dyed mine. I like watching the highlights take over from the lowlights.

A pot of cream that turns out to do nothing for your skin is a lot easier to stop than dying your hair if you don't like the results.

I've got very dark brown hair and mine are obvious. I don't like them at all and I cover them up with semi permanent colour that matches my own. Could you afford to go to a salon? They'll do a patch test first to make sure you're not allergic.

I'm surprised there's been so much negativity on the thread. I agree that noone "should" do anything with their hair but it isn't exactly unusual to start dying once you start getting greys.

Nice n easy semi permanent. Does what is says on the tin. If you're unsure about the colour (there are too many if you ask me) go for the slightly lighter one. Going too dark is ageing.

Purple If the op had said 'I'm going to dye my hair, what do you all recommend?' I would agree that negativity would be pointless and a bit rude. But what she posted was, 'What do you do when you start to go grey?' That for me, is asking for a range of opinions both for and against.

I think dyeing your hair is much more than buying a pot of unicorn poo that you can throw away any time. You're stepping onto a treadmill and once you're on, it can be very hard to get off, as many threads on here will testify.

I'm also surprised, nearly all women I know dye their hair and very few allow it to go grey naturally immediately. Colouring out greys is very common. Doesn't mean she has to do it, and yes it is a time consuming process, as is any other beauty regime, however it's not something unusual.🙄

It's not unusual but that doesn't mean it's not good to question it sometimes, especially when the op asked for different opinions.

I also stopped dyeing mine once I felt I was doing it to cover grey, rather than just for fun. I really didn't want to get to the point where I had to grow out two feet colour. Also, brown box dyes always go a bit orange and I hated that. (Really couldn't commit to salon prices). Had I been 30 or under I may have felt differently about it (but as it was I was a long way past that!).

PollyPerky · 27/02/2017 12:47

I have a mix of low and highlights but only the T-section which is a really small amount to cover the parting where the grey is a bit more obvious.

I don't need it doing often- twice a year max.
