Hi. Basicly I was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. I am clear now but still going through re-constructive surgery. The lump was attached to my skull. So, this was removed along with the surrounding skin and I had a skin graft taken from my leg to my head. ( about 1/3 of my head to cover) I then had 3 tissue expanders inserted under my skin with hair around the skin graft (balloons filled with saline water) to stretch the skin so I will eventually have a full head of hair. (amazing stuff, I know)
This has taken so long as I have had infections and it keeps setting me back so surgery has to start from scratch over and over again.
However, things are going pretty well this time. I have had my expanders in for about 8 weeks (they get expanded weekly) and I still have about another 6-8 weeks to go. Not far from looking like the elephant man!
My head is a very odd shape, 3 expanders all different sizes. I desperatly need a big hat that will cover my whole head without me looking to colourful and obvious. (not easy!) Does anyone have any ideas where I can get something like this??

Sorry about the long post, but not the usual operation so needed to explain a little.

Where is it you need the most room - at the back or on the top of your head?
Would a baker boy-type cap that has a snug band but a roomy crown thus be any good?

I've seen Jewish women wearing all sorts of hats and caps to cover their hair - lots of them are quite roomy so you can tuck long hair inside them. Some ideas (though it's a US site) here - they also have snoods which may or may not work depending where you need the room.

I am sorry I can't think of anything quite suitable (I don't have much knowledge of hats) but it is worth looking at the website www.howtolookgood.com and posting your question to Caryn Frnaklin (who runs the site). She is a really knowledgeable fashion journalist/presenter and is sure to know of something which would work. Hope you find something...

Well I have 2 expanders right at the front of my head and 1 at the back. They all have about 190mls in each at the mo and are going to get a lot bigger!!
Ooh, thanks for the links MB they look pretty good! I may have to get the credit card out now
Thankyou x

My kids wear a thing called a 'Buff' - a sort of tube of thin stretchy material that can be worn in lots of different ways, including as a hat.

would one of those be suitable?

Glad to hear that things are looking positive for you
