Style and beauty

Life must be so much simpler with straight hair.

What must that be like, I wonder? To wake up with your hair looking pretty much the way it did when you went to sleep, rather than having reconstructed itself into an interesting and artistic tribute to birds nests and haystacks? To not have to start every day by attempting to wrestle it into submission? To just be able to brush it and...and...go?

What do you even do with all that spare time? I think I'd take up a hobby.

Ah that would be me. If it helps my hair never holds a curl, they always drop out v quickly.

Me too. It definitely is easy. It always looks the same though - just woken up, shopping, work, night out - same hair. The style it stays in is acceptable though so I'm not complaining, plus, I've never had to spend hundreds of pounds on straighteners.

My hairdresser did get it to stay in curls once for a wedding with industrial quantities of hairspray. They were crunchy.

I have straight hair, but it needs washing every morning. It's quicker to wash it (and I have a shower every morning anyway) than to repair it. I just blast it dry with my hairdryer, then finish off with Babyliss Big Hair/any sort of hot air styler, doesn't take long.

I've often wondered too, Tis. Mine is not curly, not straight, just randomly kinky and frizzy. Would be wonderful to just get up and brush it and it be done, I could definitely live with it being boring! Sad

I have completely straight hair., I have a short choppy fringe which, god knows how I manage it, is routinely standing straight up Mohican-style when I get out of bed. The only way to fix it is to wash it, so I end up washing my hair every single day.

I'd love straight hair. I've considered having it professionally straightened but worry about what it would look like when it started to grow out.

it really is - get up, wash it, leave it.

mine was naturally poker straight until I had DC, when it mysterious picked up loads of irritating kinks and frizz.

Blackbirdonawire · 11/02/2017 08:26

Hmm. I spend a large proportion of my time trying to make my poker hair curl, wave, have body, and not look like an oil slick hanging limply down either side of my face.

I tie it back almost all the time, or end up with it tied back by the end of the day and I swear I look almost bald as it just sits right at my head. Zero body.

So no frizziness, but also no life. When it is curly and it works I feel like a total goddess!

I'd love to have hair interesting enough to create a birds' nest effect. I have thin, mousy poker-straight hair and I wouldn't wish it on anybody! Yes it's still straight when I wake up in the morning, but I have to wash it every day anyway because otherwise it looks limp and lank.

What sort of hair do you have OP and what do you do with it??

Mine is very curly but I only wash it twice a week, when I do I spend 30 minutes drying it in sections with a round brush. I only brush it in the mornings in between washes. If I didn't dry it I would look like Cathy Earnshaw after a week on the moor the day after washing.

Products that help me are Daniel Field First Aid Conditioner and serum. I am considering moving over to Davines products (my hairdresser stocks them) as when I have it cut I like the results.

I have thick, curly, frizzy hair. I never straighten it, it's just lifeless if I do.

I rarely brush it - much better with a wide tooth comb, but I usually just wash, serum, comb and leave. At night I plait it a s ubdi it in the morning, still neat.

I spent about 20 years straightening my wavy/curly hair and finally got sick of it. After much experimentation, I've found products that mean I can wash my hair then just leave it to dry naturally and it looks fine. It is saving me so much time, even if I do now have a mountain of shampoo/conditioner/styling stuff that didn't make the grade!

JennyOnAPlate · 11/02/2017 08:49

Google the curly girl method op. I've been doing it for a few years now and my hair looks fine when I get up in the morning. I wash it every 3rd or 4th day.

I think it's just about accepting what you have. In the 80s everyone likes curls. Now it's straight. My hair can't keep any curls even if I put curlers in. I wash it every other day or it looks oily. I just brush it in the morning. Doesn't need any blow drying.

I have magic hair. Doesn't matter what style I put it in, it will hold, for days.
It is naturally very thick and a curl through it.
If I straighten it with GHDs it will last perfectly. I don't have to brush it or anything, it just stays poker straight.
If I use curling tongs -which I do quite a bit-they will stay intact. I just get up in the morning, run my fingers through it etc and off I go.
If I get a curly blow dry it looks like I've just been to the hairdressers all week.
I only wash it every 5 days, as it doesn't get greasy.
Recently had a blow dry and met a friend on Day 4, "Ooo, you're hair is lovely, have you just had it done?"
It hadn't even seen a brush in days.
Magic hair!!
If you use straighteners does it go curly again the very next day?

Sharon soooo jealous!!

Scooter same mountain of rejected products, what worked for you in the end?

DD has curly hair. I have poker straight. Mine is much easier to look after, despite the daily washing. She had hers permed straight, but it's growing out now. My hair is boring, hers can look gorgeous, as long as it isn't a slightly damp day.

It's Big shampoo from Lush, just a little bit, and then Cantu curl defining custard and leaving it to dry without faffing with it. You think it looks all horrid and stringy then all of a sudden it's nice beachy loose curls. I tried Frizz Ease and the John Frieda stuff for ages but I don't think my hair likes silicone. Similarly, I also tried the Curly Girl thing and because my hair is quite blonde, it just looked and felt dirty.

Believe me, it is. Wellastrraight or loreal xtenso - the latter is stronger but I can't get it locally, but both last best part of a year.

Now in my second six months. Wash at night, five minutes to straighten next morning, done for three days. Curls do not suit me and make me look years older. And straight hair is just comfortable!

I'd love properly straight hair.

Or wavy hair.

Or curly hair.

Anything but the fucking frizzbucket I have.

It didn't used to be like this. My hair used to be lovely, then I had a shit perm when I was 21 fucking 19 years ago and the top bit went all frizzy and shit and hasn't ever recovered.

I just can't afford to keep having it Brazilianed.

I'm the same as Sharon magic hair. But only if I dry it properly when I wash it, it takes about 20 mins to blow it straight but lasts four days. I don't even brush it sometimes I will curl it with after a day and then that lasts about 3 days.

I agree with HeadDreamer about accepting what you have. My hair's very wavy but I have it cut in a style that suits it so I can wash it, mess it about and go (never, ever brush it!) What's the point of fighting your hair?

Grin at hair looking gorgeous as long as it isn't a slightly damp day. I hope she doesn't live in the UK then? Grin

I hear you op. I have coarse and very curly hair. If I tie it back, when I take it out it stays there. I can never just get up and go or run my fingers through it. It needs conditioner washed through it everyday and then more to hold it in its curl. It takes ages to get out the tangles even though it's always plaited or put up on top of my head at night.

Damp day? My hair gets bigger and bigger. I always want to apologise to whoever sits behind me as I know I'm probably blocking their view.

I do get mildly pissed off now when people, always with gorgeous, straight and most importantly - low maintenance hair, say "Oooh I'd love to have your hair, you're so lucky...blah blah blah"
I've started replying with - no you wouldn't, it's a nightmare. Takes at least an hour of my day to sort out.

I have serious envy over Sharon's hair. Blush

Yes to this. I am so envious of people who can wake up and look acceptable in terms of their hair. What a life that must be. I have to spend at least an hour on my hair daily. I wake up with hair like Russell Brand. Every day. I can't even get away with putting it up in a pony tail.

Op, you're not saying your brush your curls are you? I would scare the kids if I did that..... But instead I scatter then by hanging it over the steaming kettle. Brings out the curl beautifully. Then some hair oil et voila, luscious ringlets.
It is a hobby in itself though.
