What is going on with jeans trends?

I have finally lost the baby weight and want to buy a new pair of jeans. But trends seem to have moved on!

Had a quick look at my usual favourite shops and the majority of jeans seem to stop at the ankles (what shoes are you supposed to wear?!)

Also bootcut jeans seem to be back in again. Never thought I'd see the day!

Are skinny/slim jeans tucked into boots hopelessly outdated now? What jeans are you all wearing? Any recommendations for a size 12 pear shape?

Are skinny/slim jeans tucked into boots hopelessly outdated now?

God i hope not! I've just lost (am loosing) weight and am now in my smallest skinnies for ages AND have recently found THE pair of knee boots i've been looking for for my whole life and am loving wearing them together. Don't tell me i'm too late! grin

Floofborksnootandboop Wed 08-Feb-17 09:55:22

Well I still where my skinny jeans under my boots and so do my teenage DDs and DSs girlfriends. So unless we're all outdated, I think it's fine.

Laiste Wed 08-Feb-17 09:55:38

Oh re: what's coming in - i believe ankle length is in for summer. With freyed (sp?) edges?

No idea about bootcut coming back. I used to love them (10 year ago) but think they would feel odd now. Spent too long in skinnies i guess.

Ankle grazers are the thing here in SA this season.

But there are still a lot of skinny jeans around, and yes, bootcut too. I still wear bootcuts, not the very wide ones, I am a bit fussy about where I buy them as there is really only one brand that look ok in bootcut for me.

But yes, ankle grazers with flat sandals are what is being worn at the moment. Or with Converse.

MusicToMyEars800 Wed 08-Feb-17 10:04:12

new look do some good jeans I buy skinny jeans from there, just make sure you check the leg length, i can't stand the feeling of my ankles being exposed especially in this weather, i only want to wear jeans like that in warner weather, as i too like to tuck my jeans into my boots. i don't really like the bootcut leg or straight leg jeans so live in skinny jeans or leggings/jeggings grin

StainlessSteelButtercup Wed 08-Feb-17 11:09:36

Skinnies tucked into knee (and even ankle) boots is no longer a trendy look, yes. That doesn't mean it's not being worn though, especially as it's cold and most women haven't rushed out to buy sock boots to cover their chilly ankles yet. grin

There has been serious push from the fashion industry to get women to change their jeans shape for a good few years now. For the first time I think it's finally going somewhere though, as there seems to be quite a push to get people into cropped "kick flares" and those sock boots or block heeled courts.

I am old enough to remember the early 90s, when we were last moved en masse from tight leggings to bootcut jeans - the term "kick flare" was the gateway to the new shape then, too!

Shops are now getting in their spring ranges. Ankle grazer jeans are to be worn with trainers or ankle boots as shown here:

I honestly don't think trying to get people into cropped flares is going to work for your average woman on the street! I'm currently wearing normal or ankle length skinnies tucked into Dr Martens or biker boots and I don't think I look dated. Well, maybe a bit like a grunge fan escaped from the 90s...

CantstandmLMs Wed 08-Feb-17 11:38:46

All the students and teenagers are wearing "mom jeans" right now! It looks hideous!!! Wtf? The 90s is back in full swing around here!

Fuzzypeggy Wed 08-Feb-17 11:45:05

If you are interested in wearing what's fashionable then I would say don't wear skinnies tucked into knee boots, it's a look still very much worn but I wouldn't say it's fashionable at all over recent years. My favourites at the moment ar ankle grazers but when it comes to jeans I think it's a combination of what suits you, what's comfy, what you like and what's in fashion. I never choose just one of those.

''StainlessSteelButtercup - I am old enough to remember the early 90s, when we were last moved en masse from tight leggings to bootcut jeans - the term "kick flare" was the gateway to the new shape then, too!''

Yes! Same here. I used to live in the black, 'drainpipe' as we called them back then, Levi Roxanne skinnies with a 'body' tucked into it early 90s. (Remember fiddling with teeny plastic poppers under your fanny when you're pissed anyone?)

When bootcuts came out i felt like i had at least another pair of jeans worth of denim round my ankles and wasn't impressed at first. It was all proper denim back then, no choice of the lovely soft stretchy jegging fabric we're all enjoying now. Then we got used to it and when skinnies came in properly again i thought everyone looked like frogs! Now i can't imagine bootcuts! Arrggghh see what fashion does to us confusedconfusedgrin

Isadora2007 Wed 08-Feb-17 13:20:50

Laiste you will be glad to hear fanny fiddling is back in fashion with bodies being popular with the teens...
I think I have some street cred finally with teen dd as I wore the clothes she thinks are cool now- 90s patterned jeans and bodies and denim shirts etc. Scary stuff!!

murphys Wed 08-Feb-17 13:39:47

Oh yes, bodies are back in a big way.

I saw the most horrendous leopard skin one yesterday.

I had such a 90's flashback about those poppers.

why I ever bought one back in the day I have no clue, I have such a long body, pity the legs didn't follow suit, but imagine with a long body you end up with poppers up your fanjo the whole day

BabyHamster Wed 08-Feb-17 17:28:00

Interesting! I had a look round while I was out today and did notice a couple of trendy types wearing ankle jeans but they had boots so were only flashing the tiniest bit of skin.

I rather like my ankles so think I could be persuaded by short jeans in a month or so. Really cannot imagine ever wearing bootcut again though!

stainless why does the fashion industry like women to change their jeans preferences?

TroysMammy Wed 08-Feb-17 17:30:34

I love ankle grazers. On li'l ole me they are normal length. In the '90's I had a pair of 3/4 stonewashed jeans with little zips at the ankles. Normal length on me. I loved them.

DaisyQueen Wed 08-Feb-17 17:34:59

I hate boot cut jeans and live in skinny jeans. Most of mine end above my ankles anyway, even the longer length ones due to giraffe legs. I wear skinnies with timberland type boots nearly every day in this weather

Toottootcar Wed 08-Feb-17 17:39:15

Jeans can last for ages. It is therefore very important that what is fashionable in jeans changes regularly, to keep us all heading to the cash register.

Fackorf Wed 08-Feb-17 17:40:29

The fashion industry likes to change clothing preferences because then they can sell lots of brand new clothes to women with wardrobes full of nearly-new clothes.

Current fashion trends in denim: skinnies will not die, despite the increasing availability of wider-legged styles, lots of yoof are wearing them ripped, a spring trend appears to be 'covered in flowery embroidery shite'.

In recent years many have worn ankle grazers rolled up with white trainers like Adidas Stan Smith's or Supergas. This look is now too old to be ultra cool but probably won't die for a while yet.

I like dark-wash straight-leg jeans, no buggering about. They get worn with ankle boots in winter, brogues in spring/autumn and ballet flats or flip flops in summer. But I am dull as fuck.

ZaZathecat Wed 08-Feb-17 17:42:23

Hamster, that would be so we buy more of them! And it works too.

ElspethFlashman Wed 08-Feb-17 17:42:37

I have to admit I'm delighted about the ankle grazer trend.

Skinniest bit of me....grin

And I love a bit of bare ankle, me. Just like a Victorian perv.

I have also found that if your shoes are leather and warm enough, your ankles don't really feel that cold.

I bought a pair of bootcut, quite a flare on them, teenage son looked horrified and said "Those are so 80`s" seeing as he was born in 2001 I did wonder how he knew.

Fackorf Wed 08-Feb-17 17:53:10

Flared bootcuts are pure late 1990s.

They bring back many happy memories grin

AFierceBadRabbit Wed 08-Feb-17 18:27:07

I think that there are now a lot more options available, and I much prefer that to a sea of skinny jeans only in every shop in town.
There's something for everyone now, really: bootcut, flare, wide leg, skinny, crop, long, high waist, low waist, mid rise....

I'm not complaining!
I actually love the cropped ankle trend. I will be sad when it goes away. I always feel more elegant if i pair them with a small pointed heel, and there's the option to wear with trainers, etc, in warmer months.

In winter, I wear cropped jeans with a pair of slim sock boots - the length of the jeans works well with the height of the boots. Sometimes (might not be popular but who cares) I will wear them with skinny rib socks and some loafers.

Bootcut remind me of the 90's. I don't wear them often but did get a lovely pair in black from primark - quite skinny with a flared ankle. I've got a pair of jeans in nearly every style and I love being spoiled for choice!
