Tunics and leggings/skinny jeans....sorry but I just don't understand!

What is nice about this look? Surely only lanky leggy teenagers can pull this one off? Surely anyone over 30 MUST avoid?! Am becoming very tired of the rapidly changing fashions these days - "boyfriend" trousers one minute, tunic tops the next - can't we just bring back good old-fashioned elegance? Am I getting [whispers] old?

Hmm.....it's not that I'm ready for a comfy middle-age fleece, a functional haircut and a pair of sensible shoes, it's just that I don't want to wear the same things as a teenager! I'm a grown up woman, with children, a husband and a grown-up life! I think I should look like a sophisticated adult with grown up clothes to match. Nothing too serious, just well fitted flattering trousers, elegant dresses, smart boots, jumpers in decent fabric etc etc. I have a decent figure, don't look too haggard(!), get my hair done etc etc - so why do I have a lurking feeling of frumpiness for not wanting to wear "chartreuse" (a horrid colour IMHO!) or start traipsing round in sparkly silver ballet pumps?!

The Guardian article showed exactly why highwaisters are such a bad idea - the author was brave enough to be photographed in hers and they really made her hips and thighs look huge - and she normally looks lovely.
Am having a similar style crisis - my last few purchases have been from Topshop - as I will be 43 on Wednesday this must surely be wrong - but where else to go?

Molesworth, I am slim (according to DH's family I'm skinny but that's another argument). Anyway, I'm 5' 9" and a size 10, and those high waisted jeans (whether flares or skinny) look an absolute bugger on me. I try them on just for a laugh now. They make your arse look HUGE and flat and when you sit down you get rolls of flab (which are actually fabric) even when you don't have any. Whoever thought of them in the first place is evil







ps I wear skinny jeans and I'm 32 next week, but not tunics because they make me look preggers
