Is it necessary to cleanse, tone, moisturise, prime every day before you apply your make up? If I reapply my foundation do I add more primer and moisturiser? And when does serum make an appearance- I feel like I've lost my way a bit.

I'm after a glowy healthy look for daytime make up I do like make up up so don't mind buying new stuff (I'm 47) any help would be great!

I never use primer and use an acid timer maybe once a fortnight. But toner only at night, never in the morning.

Serum I only use at night (it's really expensive, that's why!) after cleansing before moisturiser.

I recommend you look into oils if you want glowy lovely skin. Best quality cold pressed oil is much cheaper than most OTC beauty products.

JOJOBA oil good for oily skin
Almond / coconut good for medium
Coconut / hazelnut good for dry

Clarins also do lovely oils with amazing smells!

Marula oil is my personal favourite. Over a hyaluronic serum. I am yet to be convinced the price matters much.

I cleanse, and moisturize including a eye cream. I wait about 10 minutes then do my make up, I use a primer all over my face including eye area before any other make up products. At night I cleanse then apply a serum. Mine is a serum in oil. Wait a few minutes then apply my creams. I do not tone as I don't like to dry my skin out.

I cleanse at night but in the morning I splash my face with lukewarm water, moisurise (often with oil, not cream) and use a separate sunscreen. I'm 60 now but the worst thing I ever did to my skin was trying out random stuff in my early 50s because I thought it was time to up my game. I think serum is basically snake oil.

Morning - cleanse (Estée Lauder), eye cream (Estée Lauder) and then moisturiser (Estée Lauder day wear) that contains an spf. Separate spf in top unless it is winter.

Before bed - remove make it with micellar water (Garnier if I am having a lean month, bioderma if not), cleanse, serum (Estée Lauder advanced night repair), eye cream and then night cream (elemis).

I use a face mask once or twice a week too.

That's just what I do. I am going to use up what I have and then re-assess, as I think the acids etc that you can now buy so easily would be better value and more tailored to my skin.

So what's the difference between a serum and a moisturiser????

That's what I would like to know too. If you read the small print on the adverts, they both do exactly the same thing i:e minimise the appearance of wrinkles.

Quick wipe with a simple make up wipe at night and some boots protect and perfect night cream, then next morning, some of the same but day cream and then once it's sunk it, do make up.

I've surprisingly good skin (seriously) for my age and I'd say dewy is down to the make up itself. Although clearly skin should be clean and moisturised. I'm honestly don't think banging lots of products on is a good thing, irrelevant of manufacturers claims, clean and moisturised is all you need unless problem skin.

Serum is like a 'shot' of active ingredients that are designed to target certain issues such as dehydration. Personally I find a lot of their claims don't work for me. It's normally watery / gel and you apply small amounts. Plus it's ££ than moisturiser usually.

Moisturiser, as I see it, is mainly to stop your skin feeling dry. But they often claim to have active ingredients too so there's a lot of overlap. Sigh.

What I would like to know is what these ingredients actually do. And why the adverts are so coy about telling you.

Morning and evening I just cleanse using Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser and then apply boots protect and perfect serum. Water, sleep and spf are the best things you can do for your skin

I do like a serum but I only buy them on offer. I prefer a oil, I like vitamin e oil the best. I use to buy one from suoerdrug in a glass bottle, cheap as chips. I would put loads on at night and my skin was lovely. Then they changed it and added lots of perfum! I now use the Body Shop vitamin e oil with serum mix, on offer for £10. Its great. The best thing for my skin is moisture and minimal chemicals. I've learnt not to bother with anti aging crap and anything that over cleanses and stripping.
