Thoughts on tent dresses on size 16+

There've been lots of summer 'tent dresses' out over the last few years where I live. I bought a couple and my husband obviously thought I was joking when I said I was leaving the house in one. He immediately stopped when he realised I wasn't joking and is a husband who's never told me to lose weight, etc.
Do you know the type of dress? Always knee length, a popular brand is Adrift. Do you think they do fat girls a favour by hiding all rolls, or the opposite?

I think an empire line or similar would be better. You could alter them quite simply yourself.

But without some kind of definition, it just emphasies overall size.

If I was wearing something like that I'd belt it in. I think really baggy stuff only really works on the very slim. I tend to wear a line, wrap or skater dresses, or now I'm feeding ahirt dresses belted

I'm sorry OP but I don't blame your husband, they are truly unflattering! I'm no skinny mini and at a size 14 I'd feel the size of a tent in it! I need a waist otherwise I look huge due to have size E boobs.

It's very unflattering IMO unless you're really slim.

I'm a 16-18 and look much better in dresses that are more fitted. Loose things like that dress just make me look huge all over as you can't see my waist etc.

Ha ha! Yes, I was starting to think he was right because I saw a fb post yesterday of a girl I know and she was wearing one. Definitely the same brand, and I know her to be about a 12 and she looked much bigger. That's why I thought I'd ask on here.
The only problem with belting or changing them to empire line is that the fatter I've got, the more of an apple shape I've become.

I bought a shift dress in a size 16 and it was only one size too big and I feel awful in it really fat and frumpy! Luckily it's made out of viscose and when I washed it on a warm wash it's now almost the right size. I think the only person who would look good in a tent dress is Victoria Beckham!

I'm currently a size 12, tall, hourglass, and they make me look like a brick shithouse.

I've seen other people in them (all shapes and sizes) and they look fab though.

I don't know it is, but I need structured clothes. Voluminous stuff looks terrible on me. So, so unflattering.

I don't think they'd ever be flattering on anyone...it's not even flattering on the skinny model!

Those dresses are minging. Not helped by frumpy floral patterns - I can't imagine them suiting anyone, not even slim women. Even VB looks like she is a child playing dress up!

I am a 16 and tend to wear clothes that skim rather than cling and ones that actually fit me. I still look like a woman whk needs to lose weight (which I am working on) but I try not to look like I want to be invisible in the attractiveness stakes.

Only good on a size 6 unfortunately..and then one that's 5.10 at least!

They're good at accentuating tininess...it's like women wearing maxi dresses over a size 8. Never looks good.

That pink floral dress looks like it should be worn by someone called Joan, who is in her late 70s, has her hair shampooed and set every week, and wears bright blue eye shadow and frosted pink lipstick. Joan thinks this dress looks "pretty and feminine" and would wear it to meet her friend Margery for lunch in the summer.

Not joking but I had a nightie like that from m and s and I thought it was lovely ha! Ha!

A friend gave me some sleeveless numbers very similar to that after she lost weight. She's about a 12 and I'm a 14 on a good day.
Needless to say they didn't even make it to the charity shop. I wasn't inflicting them on another poor unsuspecting woman..
I think Victoria beckham looks stupid in what she's wearing.
I always wear a structured dress. Got to separate the boobs from the belly somehow.

Here's another. My pattern is smaller but my dress has the same frilled bottom, puff sleeves, etc.
Then I've put one more just so you definitely get the vibe. They're actually very popular here in Australia.
