Do people have perms anymore

I have awful wavy hair, I'm so tired of straightening it every day.

For a fancy dress party tonight I have curled it with heated rollers and curling tongs. I love it, it looks amazing. But, it took so long. Can you still get perms? Nice ones?

I asked my hairdresser this. They definitely do
It, but she said that the only people that get it done are ladies of a certain age!
My mum used to do hers at homeand I still remember the stench.

My mum does. She's 70. It's worth having a chat with your hairdresser though. The girl who did mine last time is 17 and fresh out of college and said perming is her favourite thing to do - if you can find a young and funky one like her, she might well be able to do something more contemporary than the old-lady style cauliflower perm.

No advice on perms, sorry, but I can recommend the "curly girl method" for wavy hair. Mine was awful, frizzy all the time and no nice definition. Started the curly girl method (joined a Facebook group) and 6 months on I have fantastic smooth and defined waves (not trying to brag or anything )
You have to wash your hair in washing up liquid or baby shampoo to strip silicones out, then "wash" your hair with silicone free conditioner. Leave some conditioner in your hair, and use a silicone free gel or cream. "Plop" (google it!) your hair in a cotton T shirt and/or diffuse with hairdryer. There are lots of guides out there online, and I'm so pleased to ditch the straightners and the drying shampoos

Unfortunately my Mum who is in her early 70s and now bloody looks it, i m having to blow dry it straight constantly for her now....then she decided to give me advise that now I'm in my 50s i should think about a shorter cut and colour...leave my 'natural blonde' past my shoulders behind...I don't think so Ma !

Or you can do the opposite and get it straightened. Wella straight or loreal xtenso done by a competent hairdresser should last a year. Choice of strengths so you won't come out poker straight, but you get shine and tidiness. Changed my life!

My hairdresser said that loads of teenage boys /young men are getting perms. DS2 has the kind of hair they're trying to achieve (which was why she mentioned it).

If your hair is already damaged through drying it and straightening it a perm or indeed straightening chemicals will finish it off. Mine was literally snapping at the root 2 years ago.
I've had to go natural which some days I don't love tbh. But last night it behaved itself.
No more shampoo, at all. Wash with conditioner, scrub your scalp to get it clean. Leave it to dry naturally. Add gel. (Umberto curly is great). Once it feels dry all over scrunch it to get rid of the crunch feeling and you'll be left with amazing waves and curls. I do this on a Saturday and it's fine for the whole week. You can dry with a diffuser to speed things up but on a low setting.
At some point you've got to choose between condition and style I think. I want long hair so I e basically got to leave it alone

Thanks for the advice, I will have a chat with my hairdresser. My hair is in excellent condition. I blow dry and straighten it every single day. But it looks so much nicer curly. If it had a better curl my life would be so much easier to just wash, put some product in and more or less leave it.

NewBrummie - have used them for years and they are very good (though haven't had the digital perm).

woukd suggest you go for a free consu,tation - that will give you a good sense of what they can do colour wise for you.

My friend recently had a digital perm. Looked amazing. I think there was a guardian article on them a few years ago (Sali Hughes maybe?). I wanted one back then but my hair was too short.... this thread has reminded me that maybe now is the time!
