12yr old girls-fashion?

My DD is in the first year of high school and struggles to fit in. She's clueless about how to match clothes together, think strappy lacey tops and running tights. I don't have much money to spend on clothes and where we live the clothes shops are expensive ( no supermarket clothes or Primark), so I often buy from Ebay. She says she wants dresses and skirts, but I've no idea what to buy her. When I see other kids about, they seem to just wear jeans or leggings. It also doesn't help that DD has put on a lot of weight recently.
What do your 12yr olds wear? What is cool ( bleurgh, hate that word)?

Sorry can't help but following with interest. My DD is in year 7 too and will only wear jeggings and hoodies. I'm sick of her looking a scruff but don't really know anything about tween fashion. She has also recently put on weight and I'm hoping it's just hormones as her diet hasn't changed.

My dd is also a bit hopeless at putting stuff together, so I use look books on sites like Zara and then buy her an 'outfit' - which she then tends to wear together, so she generally looks 'matched' at least! I think jogging so and hoodies is pretty much tween fashion these days!

Jeggings and hoodies...

My daughter lives in 9-15 - I think - range from New Look. It's down as teens on the website and is free delivery over £40 or £50.

My daughter always looks nice and wears skater skirts as well as jeggings etc.

ruth

my younger cousins seem to like skater skirts as well. They also seemed to like rompers last summer.

Only skater skirts and skinny jeans are acceptable to 12 year old's round here. They're all in hollister or jack wills hoodies and tshirts, it seems. But new look 915 is great for tops-that-aren't-t-shirts and skirts. It's perfect for tweens.

DD wears Hollister (look at the sale,it's not too spendy) and New Look 9-15 and odd bits from H&M.
She doesn't do 'matching' but manages to pull together outfits. I think it helps that she has a limited colour palette, and avoids fuss, frills and patterns.

My 12 year old Neice seems to wear dresses with thick black tights & DM's.

My 15 year old likes skinny jeans with scrappy tops or cold shoulder tops or skater dresses.

My 15 year old Neice is all Jack Wills hoodies & leggings.

My 12 year old wears skinny jeans and hoodies mostly and a lot of black. She has purple doc martens and addidas trainers. She also likes sports leggings.
Her favourite shop is Topshop but she also likes Newlook and Jack Wills.

Zara kids. The stuff is gorgeous and the kids look 'cool' Plus the pics show whole outfits so you know what to pair with what

I have one about that age.

Give her a budget and tell her to make a short list from New Look. Review before she buys.

PS: camisole top and running tights sounds pretty typical to me.

Mine wear leggings and skinny jeans with either tops from new look teen section or superdry (check out eBay shop) or Hollister t shirts. Then it's hoodies on top. All worn with trainers.

Skinny jeans in dark colours
Hoodies in colours like black, grey, maroon
Adidas Superstars are the "cool" trainers at the moment

Dd shops at New Look teen, Primark, H&M womens (not the teen section), Boohoo and ASOS

If your dd likes to wear dresses then I'm guessing that she likes the fashion of Zoella, Taylor Swift etc? Start with who she finds fashionable and try to copy that.

I agree with New Look clothes. took DD who is 13 next month there tidsy - her Christmas money needed spending! She got 5 items -all tops. But lives in jeans and leggings and hoodies! How close are you to Primark???

Agree with the others.

If you can afford labels, then it's Jack Wills (who now have an online discount store, I'm told), Superdry and Hollister. Otherwise it's New Look.

My 13 year old lives in jeans or leggings with belly / crop tops or she also likes check shirts and then a designer hoody.

Yes, branded stuff where it is obvious (if that's your thing) so coat, hoodies, maybe a t-shirt, and cheaper generic shops for the rest. Although DD got some nice branded leggings in Hollister's sale recently for a tenner.

I have a dd in year 7 and a ds in year 9. Judging by what dd and her friends and ds's girl friends wear:

Black leggings/ black high waisted jeans
Crop tops
Hoodies (favoured ones seem to be the Tea and Cake ones from top shop as opposed to Jack Wills / Hollister
Parkas or Harrington Jackets
Superstars

Thanks for all the replies! I thought this thread had gone unnoticed.
We do have a small New Look, but I'm ot sure the teen range will fit, her school skirts are M&S 14-15 and are getting a bit tight.
She found some long Docs in a charity shop this weekend and has been wearing them with a tartan mini and opaque tights, looks great, but I know the girls at school will tease her.
She has a Hollister hoodie, though I don't think I've seen anyone else wearing that brand here, it's all Superdry, but the ladies range won't fit her.
She would like to just go into Topshop and just spend! But the prices in there are shocking and I just can't afford.
We have been on holiday this week and she has been in Primark, bought a blouse and a jumper, but didn't see any skirts or dresses, the jeggings were an awful fit on her.

I'll have a look at Zoella's vlogs and yes, she likes Taylor Swift.

To the person who asked, we live offshore, so the nearest Primark is an expensive ferry trip away. Not all retailers deliver here and returns can be expensive.

DD is in Y6 so slightly younger, but has recently really got into shopping and clothes. Her favourite shops are New Look 9-15 and H&M.

She wears:
Skinny jeans in black or stonewash, sometimes with rips
Dungarees
Slightly cropped hoodies/sweatshirts (think dancer style)
Vest tops
Check shirts
Bomber jackets
Converse or Superstars style trainers
Check scarf
Bobble hat - has to have a huge pompom.

I'm sure she's far more put together than I was at 11!

Are you sure Superdry won't fit?
My DD is size 6/8 and I'm a 16 and we both have things from there
It goes from xxs to xl so a pretty good range

Interesting thread. My dd is 11 (yr 6) and suddenly massively into fashion. It's all skinny jeans or leggings and sweatshirts at the moment. She's not massively bothered about the label yet though, thank goodness! Most of her stuff comes from Next. Adidas superstars were top of her Christmas list and she is over the moon with them. I find it a bit sad that all clothes for this age group seem to be black/grey and would quite like dd to wear a bit of colour but can't argue with fashion!

Goldfinch my DD wears a fair amount of colour, but it does tend to be darker shades - navy, bottle green, burgundy etc. She hates pastels.

Are you on the isle of man by any chance? To be honest your best bet if she likes topshop is to go in, try on the bits she likes and then scour eBay for similar/the same. Normally get some fab deals.
