Acne scarring - any recommendations for my teen DD

My 15 year old DD has been horribly spotty for a while. We've finally got them under control but she's been left with some visible red marks/scars.

They are fading, but she is terribly self conscious of them.

I had heard that bio oil was good for acne scarring, but she has very oily skin and the reviews I've read all say no good for oily skin.

Can anyone recommend anything else? Or is bio oil actually OK for oily skin

Thanks!

I don't know if you have to be over 18 or not but from what I've heard skin peels are said to be effective at reducing scars and renewing the skin. Hope you find something suitable, good luck!

Microneedling, skin peels, microdermabrasion--all by a dermatologist NOT a beauty salon or home stuff. Also for products look at skinceuticals, obagi, medik8 and neostrata..all very expensive but these actually work.

Bio-oil really doesn't do anything but amuse you while your skin does what it was going to do anyway. At worst it will give you more spots if your skin is still oily.

Red marks will eventually disappear - salicylic acid and retinols will clear them quicker plus help prevent spots.

Proper scars like icepick scarring need a dermatologist.

If your DD is getting acne with scarring then it is beyond a Style and Beauty problem and it is a medical problem and she needs a prescription.

I've always sworn by Clarins beauty repair concentrate which is fab for helping the red marks to fade. It's pricey but lasts for months as you only need a drop at a time.

Retin a cream, it will get her in the habit of wearing proper sunblock every day.

If that doesn't appeal try nip + fab glycolic extreme pads at night. Again put sunblock on every day. The la Roche posay effaclar duo is an excellent moisturiser for scars too, plus non oily sunblock.

A diet high in oily fish is excellent for skin too, look at the pericone diet for ideas.

Obagi skin care!! My husband had the worse form of acne and we spent years trying different products and wasting a tonne of money!
We called the Harley medical group with the initial idea that he was going to have a chemical peel. They suggested obagi and it really is/was amazing! Not cheap by any means but worth every penny! He was around 26 when we did it and he is 30 now and still happy with the results.

Second the La Roche Posay, though don't know if it will fade scars per se. I feel for your daughter. I had terrible acne as a teenage (eventually cured by Roaccutane) but think I was made even more miserable by the scarring than the spots themselves (which I always hoped/assumed would miraculously disappear one day). Those red (not deeply pitted) marks were the bane of my life in the sixth form. All I can say is that they will go, but it might take longer than you think. I don't think there is much you can do to speed it up. Depends on skin type, I think. If I get bitten now, the mozzie bite will also take an age to fade away. Post-acne marks took about a year for me. In the meantime, a good oil-free foundation will cover them up and make her less self-conscious. Think Neutrogena also have some new products aimed directly at this issue?

I use Boots No7 Protect and Perfect and have had acne scarring in the past. I believe the serum (I do use the day and night cream too) has reduced the redness.

Nip+Fab do a Glycolic fix range which also contains salicylic acid and it's worked wonders on my acne as well as the scarring it left behind.

Before you spend any money on 'maybe they'll work' treatments, why don't you spend the money on one (good) dermatology consultation first, and then decide. I think this is by far the best and long-term, the cheapest option. It really is impossible to treat skin without seeing it.

Whatever you do, I would advise against Bio-Oil. It's just a few oils with oodles of potentially irritating fragrances, a few essential oils, again potentially irritating, and fancy name and is almost sure to bring on a few spots.

Bio oil has lavender in it, which is a known irritant, and is no better at healing scars than something like a basic almond oil. It's an expensive rip-off.

I'd stump up for a dermatologist in the first instance.

La Roche posay Effaclar duo, has faded my acne scars with daily use. Like be the new tinted version, covers them up a bit too whilst they're fading.

Go to the GP and ask to be referred to a dermatologist. In the meantime avoid bio-oil, glycolic peels, retin-A etc and instead use very gentle products.
Get her some decent concealer - I like Boots No 7 and Estee Lauder Disappear. Friend whose mum was a pharmacist says chamomile or nappy rash cream (kamillosan or sudocrem) after washing face with Simple soap.
