Does anyone regularly wear stockings & suspender belt?

I'm really interested in trying out a suspender belt and stockings rather than tights.

I know I need to get a high waisted one with at least 6 metal clips for it to be practical, but I'm wondering if anyone has any websites, or even better, specific belts/stockings you own which are comfortable?

I've often wondered how the belt stays up?
The little elastic that stretches from the belt to the stocking seem to pull the suspender belt down as opposed to holding the stockings up.

Pinkie I think that's why you need a tight-ish high waisted one with many clips!

My husband wishes...

Aren't they very visible under skirts and dresses? All those clips and what not? They seem like quite a contraption these days.

Ugh, the thought of all of that discomfort.

I've read they can be comfier than tights. I don't like wearing tights at all.

Genvonklinkerhoffen Sat 12-Nov-16 22:17:50

Yes, I do. Just hoik everything up to where it's supposed to be. Also, knickers over the top and attach the stockings to the suspenders before putting them on. Can always rearrange things once they're on.

Would never ever wear tights and react to most hold ups. Love my stockings and suspenders. Also work in an environment where currently am about 70 men to one woman (me) so if someone had noticed, they would definitely have said. Definitely.

When I used to work as a waitress and had to wear a black skirt every day I did this, as I was always laddering them, so at least with stockings you can just replace one, rather than ruin a whole pair! Plus it feels much cooler on a hot day. I find that 4 clips are fine, but you probably need to invest in a decent quality belt so that it doesn't slip. Also, make sure you buy normal stockings, not hold-ups.

I wear them sometimes. Best places I've found to buy are vintage re-pro places like What Katie Did and Kiss Me Deadly. Better than tight because you don't have to worry about if the body is long enough/do they stay up/are the legs long or short enough.

AmeliaJack Sat 12-Nov-16 22:25:18

I used to as a student as stockings were cheaper and as Eastern said you only have to replace one if you ladder them.

I don't in general think that they are as comfy as tights though.

No they are a complete pain to wear and show through clothes.

Comfort than tights by far. If you wear a petticoat or slip under the skirt/dress for an extra layer it makes the clips less visible. Though stockings only work with skirts below the knee. Try sitting down and seeing if leg is visible or not! Hold ups can also be good and totally invisible.

Thanks everyone! Lots of helpful responses.

I've been looking at What Katie Did but I am finding the sizing confusing. I have measured my waist as 34 inches, and I usually fit comfortably in a size 14. I wouldn't mind killing two birds with one stone and getting one which is high waisted with some sort of stomach control element as I usually wear control tights. Trying to find some which have reviews is proving difficult!

I did whilst pregnant to solve my candida based problems. <not sexy>

I bought a few nice ones from John Lewis online. Something Holliday. Can't remember what exactly.

Wore fairly loose skirts or leather ones (on trend at the time) so the clips weren't a problem.

Peace it's funny you should say that as I have had thrush repeatedly over the past couple of months and I wonder if tights are exasperating it. I'll have a look at JL thank you.

I used to always wear stockings and a suspender belt but to be honest, I find it all very uncomfortable. Tights shouldn't be uncomfortable if they actually fit properly.

MyWineTime Sat 12-Nov-16 23:15:50

Far more comfortable than tights if you are taller than tights were made for!
Also cooler so reduced chance of thrush.

4 clips are fine, make sure the waist band is quite wide, that makes it far more comfortable and keeps in place.
I never clip the stockings on before I put them on, always afterwards.
Always wear knickers over the top of suspenders.

If you buy different brands, store them in groups (I use small bags) in your drawers. 3 brands variety of black can often look different when on but are difficult to tell the difference between them in the drawer!

Am I the only one old enough to remember when tights were something only little girls
wore? I think Mary Quant invented them in about 1966 but they took a few years to become mainstream. Tights were necessary when skirts were getting so short. Before that it was a right of passage getting your first suspended belt, aged about 13, like your first bra, from then you wore stockings to school, seems unbelievable now! Come 1970 tights were becoming the norm.

MyWineTime Sat 12-Nov-16 23:26:44

I don't wear skirts tight enough for my suspenders to show, but even if I did, how is that different to a bra outline showing?

Short skirts and stockings are fine as long as you are tall.

Tights shouldn't be uncomfortable if they actually fit properly.
They don't fit properly most of the time - the crotch ends up heading towards my knees (very long legs) and even when I can get extra long ones, they make me very hot and sweaty.

There is a reason why tights completely took over from stockings and suspenders. Because they are much, much more comfy and convenient. I was sucked into the stocking hype when I was about 21/22. It was an itchy, draggy, fally-down nightmare. I lasted about ten days and couldn't return to tights soon enough. There is nothing sexy or alluring about having Nora Batty stocking wrinkles or suspender clips snapping open while you try to get off a bus. And for the people who suffer from thrush - buy open-crotch tights.

Neoneon Sat 12-Nov-16 23:30:34

Never ever wear tights. My mother was of the opinion they were awful and caused thrush.

We got suspenders/stockings about 13/14 and I've worn them since. I'm only 33!

It's hard to find normal ones not scratchy novelty bedroom ones.

justinelibertine Sat 12-Nov-16 23:31:24

I usedcto wear hold ups regularly until one fell down round my ankle in Tesco. Never again.

leccybill Sat 12-Nov-16 23:36:27

Primark 120 denier opaques tights are literally the answer to all of life's questions if you ask me.
I wear them all of winter, every year. Comfy, warm, flattering, go with anything, stay up, slimming effect, only cost £4.
