Horrible short hair can't get past the nasty stage (pic)

Help! So sick of my hair, it's fine, limp and thin at the front. I have this haircut but it's so bloody frumpy and now its growing out (it was cut up over the ears which was even more ageing) I'm tucking the sides behind my ears. I'm looking to get the back cut in a bit to help it form more of a bob shape as I'm growing it out.
Trouble is I'll grow it out a bit but it's even more limp, fine and dull. I'm not sure whether to colour it dark, go lighter but I need to do something as the roots are just full of grey.
Any ideas what I can do? Am I better keeping it short and using product to keep it full (and washing it every day) or would I be better growing it out a bit?
Any suggestions for colour? Red doesn't suit me as ive got a high colour anyway and it makes that worse.
Any pointers would be appreciated, I feel like an old woman with it 😞

I think that looks really nice! Honestly. And I am super-judgey about hair. :)

Like the idea of your keeping the back super-short like, short fading into clipper-short at the very bottom while you grow out the top.

I really like the colour. Mousse is great for adding volume.

Vitamin B helps hair growth. Marmite is great! My friend could only eat marmite on toast when her ex-H left her, and a couple of months later her hair (which had always been pretty thin and wouldn't grow) was MAGNIFICENT.

Colour-wise, I like what you have! (SO not helping.) those blonde streaks through the caramel brown look awesome.

Go to the trendiest hairdresser near you and get their advice. If you live in Manchester, go to Reuben Wood.

I'm not a fashionista, but I've had similar cuts and used clips in the fringe to funk it up a bit whilst growing it out!

Hahah even though I'm happily married i don't want the 'mum' hair!

I don't live anywhere near Manchester unfortunately, I did go to a trendy salon for this - the stylist had the most amazing cut, shaved in at the back and sides coloured in this beautiful platinum grey. I just wish I had the guts (and sharp jawline) for a really edgy cut and colour.

Trouble is im 43 and my brain thinks I'm still thinks im 23.

My daughter informs me I have a mullet in the back plus it's dyed dark brown at the back, it's only the top and front that have the lighter hair. I like the longer front though, just can't decide whether I should cut back up over the ears or tuck the hair behind -and colour it something zany-

My hair is similar though with the parting slightly more to the middle and also fine and flat. I'm not very happy with either but I know I'm useless at growing it or any styling more complicated than a quick blow dry.

In your case I would add some darker colour in to make it look less old.

I like this sort of colour and cut, not sure how far away lengthwise I am and whether going blonder will be even more ageing. I hate this getting old business.

Your hair looks great!
Not frumpy at all!

That wouldn't take long I don't think.
I agree your hair looks great as it is. It doesn't look fine at all.

I LOVE the picture you have linked to and reminds me of when sienna miller had her hair cut short.

I like the colour in your hair and it in no way looks fine or thin. I am not so keen on the pointyness of the cut and feel like something blunter would be cooler looking.

I'd stay well away from clips and other accessories unless your whole
Look is quite vintage/curated.

Another short hair do is the woman from
Texas her hair is always on point.

Hey!

Hair stylist here...

in my opinion you should get it cut at the back and keep getting that tidied up regularly while you grow the layers out to frame your face more. That way you'll be able to grow it out gradually but still have a lovely style.

As for the colour some lowlights scattered through the fringe and top and some highlights on the other side will balance it more. Add a toffee in to break up the two tone. Grin

Apparently B vitamins, silica (as in horsetail extract) & MSM or collagen supplements all help with hair growth rates. As does regular scalp massage with your fingertips. I couldn't verify the supplements myself, although I know people who do. However I used to do the scalp massage & my growth rate increased significantly while I kept it up. Summer - sunshine also helps, apparently. I don't know if it's the vitamin D, longer days, warmth, or something else, but I know a lot of people get much monthly less growth in winter.

I think your hair looks lovely!

There's a funny blue splurge on your face though, didn't want to mention it, but it's a little noticeable

Yes you've gone overboard with the blue eyeshadow Grin

Dying it all blonde would thicken it up as bleach 'roughs' up the cuticle. You could be brave and go for blonde all over?

Please don't have a "zany" colour put through. Please don't.

Okay maybe not zany, am thinking of blonding up all over though as my hair always feels much thicker and doesn't go so greasy and flat.

I started growing mine from a very short over the ears style in Feb and it's now, finally, in a bob. I've just been getting the back tidied up every 6 weeks or so while the sides grew down and the whole process hasn't been too bad (apart from the fact that my new passport photo was taken in April so I'm stuck with a pic of me with inbetween stage hair for the next 10 years!).

I love that silver grey colour though.....shame it looks authentic on older women!
