Wanted ombre but ended up with ginger roots...

I have naturally dark blonde hair but usually have half a head of highlights to brighten it up. I noticed last time I had my hair done it was becoming one block colour and a little harsh on my pale complexion so I thought I would try something new.
I showed my hairdresser many pictures of blonde ombre and said I wanted the colour at my roots to be similar to my natural colour to make it more flattering & lower maintenance when it grows out.
A couple of hours later and I am left with 4 inch gingery blonde roots which don't match my natural hair colour and don't blend into a gradient with the previous highlights.
I was clearly really disappointed which is when my hairdresser said she had to use a warm colour else the blonde would've gone green, and that its going to be a long process to get the colour I want. I wish she had told me this beforehand

Is there anything I can do at home to tone down the ginger roots? I've tried the purple shampoo but that just seems to be making my blonde ends whiter.

Has she asked you to go back? To complete the long process I mean.

I'm a little bit confused so she put colour on your roots even though you didn't want her to?

Sorry, no I asked for a colour on my roots similar to my natural dark blonde so it would look like the ombre style in the picture. (a gradient of dark blonde to light blonde)
She said the next step would be to put a cool brown over the ginger roots but I don't particularly want brown roots and I can't afford the charge till after payday so I was waiting a solution in the short term.
I assumed it would have been a one step process.

I have heard a lot of people say the same thing as you OP, and I think that some hairdressers just can't do the ombre thing. Perhaps they can only do what they originally learned in college. They have a go, but the results are not good.

I think the best option is to find a hairdresser with a website or Facebook page, and look at pictures of ombre styles that they have actually done themselves. That way you know they know how to do it.

I know this is no help to you, and good luck with toning down the colour that you don't like. I have had many hair disappointments myself, and find it really hard to find someone who can colour hair well.

I love the picture you posted by the way, I would love to have my hair that colour!
