To highlight or not to highlight

So with the advent of balayage and ombre, are regular highlights that start from the root naff? Seems like it's all about the darker roots at the moment but I so need to brighten up. I had switched to using a 7 on my roots instead of my usual 8 so now I have a DIY ombre look but just worried I can't really pull it off at 44 and keep thinking I just look like my roots need doing!
The problem with highlights from the root is the regrowth is so obvious plus they build up over time to block blonde which just washes me out. What shall I do - just switch back to all over 8 colour or add highlights for blonde oomph?

How about going for hidden highlights? You see flashes of the highlights as your hair moves but you never see the roots.

Agree with burnished silver, get highlights from the root but below your parting.

I think balayage and ombre have had their day now. It was a big thing for a while, but most people I know seem to be ditching them for "normal" highlights again.
My hairdresser also told me last week that she's been doing a lot of ombre "corrections".
