Kitting myself out for staying WARM standing in fields watching football!

That's it really... DS1 has joined a football team and I'm going to be spending a lot of time in muddy fields watching him. I get very grumpy when I'm too cold!

I have a down jacket and a fairly reasonable waterproof jacket but not much else (though I do have a thermos!). Have been browsing merino base layers, hand warmers, Scandinavian fleeces but don't know what's best.

I don't mind spending a bit of money if it's going to keep me toasty (and not look too frumpy either). Any ideas?

layers and more layers
a hat
gloves
and most importantly boots. you need your feet to stay dry. again layers, 'normal' socks underneath and welly socks on top. make sure shoes/boots are big enough.

I used to take a hot water bottle to tuck into my coat whilst watching training in the evening through the winter.

Any advice on what layers? Base layers (any good brands)? fleece?

Get one of these bad boys. I have a couple of Lands End down coats and they are so warm. Also, they come down to your knees so almost to your boots. I have some Merrell boots which are incredibly warm - you need plenty of insulation under your feet, and wellies are a short cut to cold feet.
You'll look more frumpy freezing your bum off, than in a warm coat and boots that you don't have to pile things under to keep warm. Get a cute hat, gloves and scarf plus a contigo cup for your coffee

Thermal tights are FAB.
In Dec, Jan, Feb I sometimes wear thermal tights then leggings or ski pans then tracksuit bottoms ove the top.
You REALLY don't need to worry about what you look like - warmth is the key and you get warmth fro layers.

Wear boots that are a bit big so you can wear ski/walking socks on top of normal socks on top of thermal tights.
Hoodies are good as keep your neck warmer than jumpers.

Get a big golfing umbrella.

Any layers will work, it doesn't need to be pricey.

Go to Uniqlo and buy lots of long sleeved heat tech tops. And possibly leggings to wear under jeans. You'll need ski socks and sorrel type waterproof boots. There are some nice ones in Costco st the moment. Then I would wear a merino jumper like icebreaker then your down coat with a big scarf and hat and gloves. Lands end do fab coats but if you can run to it get a Canada goose. Warmest thing I've ever owned.

DON'T wear jeans when it's wet - they really retain the water.

Yep layers, you don't need to spend a lot.
I used to wear;
undies
Tights and vest top
fleecy lined legging - got some great ones from Primark cheap as chips
Long sleeve T Shirt
socks
Thermal Socks
Jeans - not so good in heavy rain
Sweater
Parka
Waterproof boots
Gloved and earmuffs in winter
Not very glam but lovely and warm

Really good boots! The cold can creep up through your feet and make you feel awful.

I have Dubarrys (£££) but last for years. FitFlop boots are also toasty (I think it's the thickness of the sole), but have next to no tread, so don't wear if you expect mud, great for AstroTurf.

And uniqlo heat tech is really good! They did socks and tights last winter. I've not seen them yet, but worth keeping an eye out for when they appear.

Odlo Originals Warm zip neck top and leggings. They're like wearing a soft, comfortable, very lightweight hot water bottle. I live in a very chilly granite-built house and really couldn't imagine being without these fleecy saviours.

Thanks. I have a lovely North Face down jacket so I'm ok there. But hadn't thought about boots.... now have my eye on these lovely Merrell ones

boots

So I think I need base layer + fleecy mid layer + coat then warm socks, boots, fleece-lined leggings (didn't know these existed), and hat, scarf, gloves, and enormous brolly. Might pay a trip to Uniqlo. Any good fleece jacket recommendations - mine are cheapy ones and very thin?

Zip on zip off trousers
Try any equestrian store
They are also windproof
Go over trousers and boots.
With correct footwear and jacket you are sorted plus once off (unzip both sides job done) you are normal again

This is what I wear. You get the best of all worlds, with the neck zip.

May I recommend Timberland Snow Boots; something similar to these beauties (that I may own...). Waterproof AND insulated.

I wear a North Face arctic parka. The only thing I have ever been warm in. Berghaus waterproof trousers over jeans and bamboo long johns. Waterproof Emu sheepskin lined boots or waterproof walking boots and mohair socks. I'm the only one who wears waterproof bottoms, in my mind they are a must, mine unzip most of the way up the leg, I can then sit on wet benches etc. I don't wear gloves, hands in pocket or up sleeves.

I am the coldest person on earth. Last winter I gave in and bought a sheepskin coat from eBay. I have never spent a better £60.

Warm socks are your best friend - feet get bloody freezing when standing still for 1.5 hours +. I would say a warm coat, gloves, hat and warm socks are the essentials.

Another vote for Lands End coats. Not very glam but really warm . Gloves, hat and scarf make a big difference .

Definitely layers. Sometimes it starts off really cold but once the sun comes out it warms up and you need to strip a couple of layers off.

I wear wellies, with both normal socks and welly socks underneath. Mine are from Joules.

This time of year I tend to wear a jumper with a down gilet. As it gets colder I move to a long down coat.

A hat is essential. You lose a lot of body heat through your head.

You also need a big umbrella. I bought one from Monsoon a few years ago, which is prettier than most golf umbrellas.

When it is really cold I wear base layer leggings and top. But then you can overheat when you go into the clubhouse!

My DC play football, rugby, hockey and ride. I seem to spend most of my winter outdoors.
