Long hair for years, considering of going short - have you done it?

....and if so, did you regret it? Or was it the best thing you ever did?!

My hair's been varying lengths from all the way down my back, many years ago, to shoulder length. It's highlighted blonde and in quite good condition but I'm bored of just having it tied up all the time, I hardly ever wear it down and I'm ready for change! I fancy Victoria Beckham / Frankie Bridge style , longer fringe, side parting.

In my braver moments I'm imaging easy to do, light and stylish. When I'm not so brave I'm imagining constantly needing it done and it just going flat and teenage boy-ish!!!

Pros and cons, please!!!

I had a style similar to that you are describing for about 7 years. Cut it off after dd1 (from just below shoulders, but had been longer in past). Like you, was sick of always having it up.

Pros - looked like a definite style, was easier to get to look good as worked well with my hair.

Cons - needed more regular trims, less options to vary style with putting up, pinning back etc, needed washing more often to look good (again, no day 3 pony tail).

I think it suited me better short but the cons mean I've grown it back over the last year or so. I feel more fashionable somehow, although I probably look less stylish and I spend 90% of my time with it up still.

In conclusion, still undecided on my own hair but happy to have had a change, and a change back.

I had waist length hair for about 40 years, almost always tied in a pony tail. I was talking with someone once about having it put up for DD's wedding, and she swished it up on my head, said, look, go get it cut short, showed me in a mirror, and I did, and never regretted it - although I now have a vast collection of warm scarves!
I have it almost at collar length, and cut back off my face, with a fringe swept to one side. Once it starts to grow a bit, so it's noticeable, off I go and have it chopped back again. I love it, the cut has taken years off me, and it's so nice not to keep trapping my hair everywhere - I used to regularly shut it in the car door!
Go for it - it'll soon grow back if you change your mind.
I was surprised about how bouncy my hair is when short. It used to lie flat to my head when it was long, and now it's short I have to have it thinned, or I look like Crystal Tipps!
I do agree with having to wash it a lot - that was quite a surprise.

I found short hair you have to "do" every day

My hair is much more high maintenance since cutting it short. Growing it out feels like it's taking forever. (I am pretty lazy and don't enjoy styling my hair, so I am happy to announce my experience is totally subjective)

I've done this a few times. I always love it short but it's a pain because I have to do it every morning because I have naturally really wavy hair and the style I had (similar to what your describing) can't take a wave.
If you've got dead straight hair that will just need a hairdryer, it might not be as bad.

But yeah, it was more high maintenance than my long hair which I can just put in a messy bun if I don't have time or inclination to sort that morning

Love it Rufus! Wish I had the guts. I'm thinking about starting swimming (see other thread) and the thing that always puts me off is having to wash and dry my hair. This could be the solution if only I was brave enough!

I did and got it cut be a really good stylist. I explained I just wanted to wash and go and she listened when I told her about its oddities. I love it but it will need more maintenance.

my hair is that sort of style...asymetric swooshy long fringe, side parting

It is very fine, mousey dirty blonde, and very very straight....I actually do NOTHING at all exciting to it.

wash it every couple of days, conditioner once a week if I remember, and in fact since i discovered dry shampoo I am washing it less often.
I only towel dry and then comb it through and it dries nicely
If I blast it with the batiste it looks lovely and is a bit more volumey and well behaved

I've done it a few times but am currently growing out a really short style.
Short hair is great but requires really regular trims to keep it great. Life is easier with short hair but I find it does get a bit boring after a while hence the desire to grow it again.
I would say go for it, it's only hair, it will grow again if you don't like it. Just make sure you have a good hairdresser you trust.

Yeah I did. Went from shoulder Length to very short - long quiffy too and shaved sides. I got lots of compliments but dh and my mum both hated it. I also got hit on by a lot of women (not that that's a bad thing!) . I just got bored of it after a while and have been growing it out since October. It's about chin/ear length now and starting to get easier to do stuff with it. I just get bored easily I think. It was nice and easy and did look v cool (it was also bleached and dyed silver) but ultimately that's all I could do with it. Yawnsville
