What are yours?

Me

  1. No boobs and legs, one or the other
  2. No socks with sandels
  3. No socks with skirts
  4. No showing of sockage with long trousers on
  5. No bra straps showing
  6. No black underwear under white clothes
  7. No low cut so you can see boobage
  8. No trousers flapping around the ankles
  9. No pockets on boobs

10. No denim with denim
11 None of those trainer socks
And I'm sure there are loads more

Where did all these rules come from?

Agree with all the above except the pocket on boobs as I need all the help I can get in the boob dept.

I'd also go with no trouser hems above the heal with the exception of 7/8ths.

No cut off any things especially wide leg trousers.

Only one pattern at any one time

Only two/three colours at any one time.

No clothing poking out below the hem of your coat.

No vpl or vgl (visible gusset line)

Nude undies under white clothes

I'm a bit overweight - Size 14-16 with big boobs even when slimmer...

  1. Seamless bra wherever possible
  2. Default bra skintone
  3. Camisole under anything remotely see-through
  4. No bra straps showing
  5. Sleeves 3/4 or longer (no sleeves that end at the bust line - visually widening).
  6. Plain colours nearly always - very few prints, scarves the main exception. For more versatility when putting things together.
  7. "Longer looks leaner" silhouette - no skater skirts for me, I usually wear trousers.

Ooh I've thought of another one

No skirts that flare and fall from your widest part In my case tummy as you end up with a hoop of fabric highlighting the worst bit.

  1. Good underwear.
  2. Avoid black or white next to my face, also anything very bright or very pale.
  3. Show off my best features, play down the rest.
  4. My body's changing so keep reviewing what suits me.
  5. New styles look weird at first but the eye adjusts.
  6. Except for skinnies - try and remember next time around.
  7. Clothes can be frumpy; people are not.
  8. If it doesn't break any of these rules, then try it. The worst that can happen is, I'll look an arse.
  9. Provided it has sleeves.

Oh goodness I agree with most of these.

Yes yes yes to the wide leg cut off trousers. I look ridiculous at the best of times and those just finish me off and make it look like I'm doing a stint at the circus!!!

Also no visible spare tyres through sheer tops. Do folks really not realise?

I do have a thing for prints. But you have to be so careful how the prints fall. Flowers over each boob for example....

I'm the opposite in the coat department, as I have to have something showing if the coat is knee length or shorter. Otherwise I feel like one of those strippers who is only wearing underwear underneath (bats, I know!).

And any tops that make me look pregnant - you know the ones. They fall oh so gracefully on stick thin folks but anyone with a bit of meat looks like they have a bump to hide.

Yes to the only one pattern at a time. And yes to the only a few colours at a time.

Over where I live (not UK) there was a fashion for weird hemlines and odd patches of fabric stitched on in strange and wonderful ways. It was very wrong and the shops were full of it!

And I do my very best to avoid camel toe or muffin tops.

And my husband wonders why it takes me so long to get dressed in the morning. He doesn't have rules, he can't understand the rules. I want to be a man.

Never wear red and black together.
No crew necks- doesn't suit
Dresses with pockets where possible
Iron your clothes
No orange near face
Don't shop in New Look- quality and cut is horrendous and I look like a tit in their clothes. Too cheap and young looking
Long sleeves with short shorts
Painted toe nails always

Same here. And they can be very useful. I don't have problem arms either and loathe 3/4 sleeves. If I am hot I want short sleeves or sleeveless. If I am cold I want my wrists covered.

No lace
No sequins
No pink
No visible bra straps
No black outside of work (just feels too '90s)
No loud/big prints

All of which can look fabulous on others. Entirely personal preference.

Yes, what is it about lace? It's either old grannyish or tarty. I can't find a good lace look (for me).

As for blac, we here everyone wears black, all the time. I am adjusting but it's taken 6 years.

I love pink. But put it on and feel like a fat barbie.

No muffin top! So I try to go for trousers that are high waisted.

No more than 2 pieces of jewlery at a time. Otherwise I feel too blingy.

No see through leggings! I tried to stop wearing leggings as I wanted to look a bit smarter. Caved in and bought some really thick ones (not see through) I have looked at them from every angle in the light lol they are so comfortable!

Leviticus · 17/08/2016 10:32

Ooh I love a 3/4 sleeve. I have long arms mind you so have given up on finding a long sleeve that covers the wrists.

I generally write off anything with any King of slogan on - it feels silly somehow.

I keep coats dark and neutral. I avoid quirky anything.

I'm by no means stylish though. I think I look best - tallest and leanest - in head to toe slim-fitting black.

And statement jewellery!

There's a theme of fear in my wardrobe I think...

Cellardoor23 your post about see through leggings reminded me of a lovely dress I had when pregnant. Wore it with some very comfortable support knickers over the bump. Elegant I looked....until the photos were developed. The flash had somehow gone through the non-transparent dress and picked up the huge white knickers. Anyone else had this happen?!

I'm with PinkyPlumet: no real rules I follow.

However: I avoid pale greys as I think they wash me out. Avoid strapless tops as I can never get the bra right. Avoid on-the-knee dresses/skirts as feel they look frumpy on me.

These are rules that work for me rather than some dictate from others. My mother used to have this thing about never wearing a skirt without a "slip". Ridiculous. Can you even buy slips any more?

Report
highclassmamma · 17/08/2016 10:50

Whenever I've worn a petty coat it always rides up inside the skirt using the tights for a helping hand. I avoid lined skirts for this reason. Nothing worse than walking around tugging down your skirt. And skirts have to be tested to make sure they are not those ones that you thighs decide to eat.

All these rules that I follow are my own rules. Not sure where they have come from! I am a restrained rebel.

  1. Long tops with skinnies, at least semi-bum covering.
  2. virtually no prints. Not exactly a rule, just vanishingly rare for me to find a print in the right colours and scale
  3. No black. Not even leggings or shoes or piping etc. I hate it on me. Charcoal and almost-black are perfectly acceptable.
  4. No more than one bright colour in an outfit, with the occasional exception of the addition of bright nails, but even that feels a bit much.

No raglan cut jackets/tops as they just make me look like a lump (I have big boobs)
Always wear a decent bra
Never be afraid to at least try something new and different
No black unless I have had enough sleep (so basically no black!)
Keep pockets on suits/coats/jackets and smart trousers sewn up or empty
Nothing cut on the bias as it just doesn't suit me
No leggings or breton tops - nothing wrong with either item, I just overdid both every time I was pg
Always buy the best quality shoes you can afford and learn how to spit and polish

Great thread! These rules are just for me, everyone else can crack on Smile

Black or white bras and knickers only - keeps it simple
No empire lines (fitted under bust then draping loosely - instant pregnancy look when you have big boobs)
No jewellery apart from earrings and ring
No black next to face
Flat shoes / boots only
Leopard print is a neutral
Nothing skin tight or too small
Boobs or legs - never both. Usually legs
Eyes or lips - never both. Usually lips

Probably loads more.....
