Cold shoulder tops...

I may be late in summer to try but I'm a little scared to try cold shoulder tops!
I think some look silly and poncho-like but I have seen some lovely ones but not sure they'd look right on me; I have not-skinny arms and I feel like I'd always feel self-conscious of the fact that it'd look like I'm wearing them to hide the bingo wings .
Any one else think the same?

I don't like cut outs on shoulders, waists etc as they just look cheap to me.

I too think they look awful. And although new trends can hang around for years I can't see this one lasting even into Winter so I'm not even going to try and embrace it

I like Bardot tops but this cold-shoulder fad just looks awful. I agree with pp that they look cheap and nasty (and that goes too for the material used in most of them).
I think any cutouts are ridiculous, can't see the point of them.

I love them. My CS tops look neither cheap nor nasty. They look fab. Obviously they don't suit everyone. Nothing ever does.

I like them, I hate my fat arms and a CS top just shows my slim shoulders so I feel a lot more confident.

I've got a nice cold shoulder jumpsuit, ticks all trends for me, shall wear it to death and then bin it and not give it s moments thought when it's "out"

Nope - can't stand them. I've seen lots of nice looking tops that have been completely spoilt when you take a closer look and realise they have those daft shoulder cut-outs. I've got fat arms (which match the rest of me ) and they'd look bloody daft on me - nothing like drawing attention to something you'd rather conceal. Like those sleeveless tops with polo-necks on - they're not one thing or another. You're either hot so need no sleeves or are cold so do need them.

Right, I think I'll avoid them altogether and work on getting better toned arms! I'm mega self-conscious as it is and I think wearing one will make me feel worse! I'll stick to ribbed vests or normal short sleeved tops.

Most f the people who don't like them are saying they don't like them because they have fat arms. Fair enough. But people who don't have fat arms shouldn't be constrained from wearing what they want or told they look cheap just because people with fat arms have a complex about it. I have fat knees (well, I have roughly normal sized knees in the middle of skinny legs) but I don't go round saying above the knee skirts look cheap. I just don't wear them.

I have a casual, black DKNY one. Definitely not cheap, nor cheap fabric.

I think it flattering, but I have quite nice shoulders, and don't have fat arms.

Well I like mine, it's Wedgwood blue and lace from RIver Island. I wore it a few weeks ago for a night out and I don't think it looked nasty.For the record, I do have good shoulders, due to lots of arm exercises. I also really like Bardot tops and love to see people wearing them, but I couldn't part with my bra and detest strapless bras.Each to their own.

I think you need to try a few on. They look a bit crap on their hangers in the shop, but some look lovely on. If you have nice shoulders with a bit of a tan then show them off. Nobody has fat shoulders after all.

My only issue is what if you really do get cold shoulders? The arm material gets all bunched up under a little cardi or jacket, so it's impossible to put something over the top without the sleeves of your top scrunching up like big biceps underneath.

I have a few and really like them, definately not cheap and nasty!
The only thing is, when you go on holiday and catch a bit of sun you'll have odd shaped tanned patches!

They're not my thing, but what I have really liked on other people are off the shoulder tops, also with straps, if that makes sense. I saw a girl wearing a blue and white stripy one which was blouse material as opposed to t-shirt, she looked amazing in it. For what it's worth, I reckon they won't be around next summer so possibly something it would have been better to buy back in May to get the wear from.

I've got a couple of nice ones from Dorothy Perkins. 100% cotton, striped with short sleeves but shoulder cut outs.
I quite like them on me.

I don't mind them the cold shoulder tops but I prefer the Bardot tops

They are just awful. I have never seen anyone wearing one and thought it looked nice. I would never consider one and I do not have fat arms.

The trouble with the bardot tops is that as soon as I move my arms upwards in any way, the blooming top rides up over my shoulders and ends up round my neck . They're ok if you're not moving much, posing at a bar sipping wine, for example.

Most of the nice ones I've seen are worn by slim models who have nice toned arms and it's a style I think requires the wearer to have the assets to pull it off, then again that's just my opinion.
After having my DS two years ago I've lost a bit of weight and want to try what styles are in season and ditch the tunics!
Judydreamsofhorses - Yes, I know what you mean; I think they're more like bardot tops with straps which are the ones I like! It's the tops that have a literal round hole at both sides that I think are a little silly but that's just my opinion.
areyoubeingserviced, ILostItInTheEarlyNineties - I may join you both when it comes to bardot tops but do you wear them with normal bras with the straps showing or are you comfortable wearing them with bandeau bras; or even no bra at all for that matter??

I just wear mine with a strapless bra. After two children, no bra is not an option!

I prefer them as a winter trend with long sleeves. I'm not good with flappy

I tried one on in Primark and realised that no matter how cute it would look I'd keep catching doors.

the problem I have with them is that they are often aimed at the larger lady like me, so they are a big baggy top with a 'sexy' cut out that really does not work and screams to me as 'big girls clothing' so even on a skinnier person I think they look odd. I much prefer the bardot top or the ruched elastic gypsy top and if I were slim enough would wear these with a strapless or no bra at all. I do however love the 'square' shaped top with short sleeves and a wide neck that slips off one shoulder effortlessly. I have one that makes me feel sexy and effortless which is no mean feat at my size

I haven't seen one that's looked good on anyone, regardless of arms! I have slim arms myself. I just don't think they do anyone any favours. And clothes with odd sections cut out will always look cheap imo. It's just not a stylish look.
