Advice please! VERY oily skin

Afternoon all - this is my first post on MN.
I have spoken to people IRL about this, but still struggling with very oily skin. Sometimes I think I should just have done and wash my face with Fairy Liquid. I also suffer with breakouts.
Looking for recommendations for skincare.
In the past I have used DermaQuest, which kept my skin quite stable, but still odd spots. It was pretty expensive and not amazing, so have swapped about a bit since then. Had similar results with La Roche Possay Effaclar and had similar results. In an effort to find something better I have have just swapped to Vichy Normaderm. I like the scrub like quality to it, but have broken out in quite big, angry spots since starting with it.
Also, any make up tips gratefully received. I wear make up very rarely but would like to find a few go to products that I could use quickly, on a daily basis. Aiming to be a little less low maintenance....

Can you try and ask for a sample of Clarins Lotus oil?

The one for oily skin? It's sounds mad but it works and after all you have tried the other options.

Pure olive oil soap made a huge difference to my skin. I buy it off ebay.

My skin is seriously oily - if I cleanse, I then use mattifying primer, bb cream and powder, I'm shiny within 2 hours. Now I don't bother with powder, just use blotting papers on my face every time I go to the loo. It doesn't cake as much. The lovely Lisa Eldridge has some great advice videos on her website.

Drinking water and avoiding sugary food makes it less bad.

I once heard that oily-skinned people wrinkle less as they age - hope it's true!

I have oily skin and whilst I have no miracle cure, I have been using clarins products recently and it has helped a bit. I use the exfoliator in the morning and a mattifying cream after-but the tiniest amount and only if needed- as I use a tinted moisturiser. I have given up on foundation as it makes my skin more oily and spotty. Clarins primer is also good.
I use clarins nightcream a couple of times a week if my skin is feeling dry.
I still have to touch up my powder a couple of times a day but at least it has helped a little and stopped breakouts.

Thanks everyone!
Chardonnay - I will definitely ask for a sample. I have only ever used Clarins Beauty Flash, but I think they do quality products.
Craptastic - I am currently using Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser (on the odd occasions that I wear make up) and was wondering if swapping to a foundation might help- maybe not.. .
TheNotoriousPMT - I used to use blotting papers when I was a teenager and had forgotten about them. I will definitely pick some up! Will look for Lisa Elmbridge videos on YouTube. Wasn't she the lovely make up lady that used to do 10 Years Younger?
Apologies if I haven't tagged you guys in properly - I don't know what I'm doing yet!x

I just found the combination of having oily skin + foundation was a recipe for spots! If I had to use foundation it would be revlon as they do one for oily skin.

Thanks so much. I will hold fire on the foundation. Get those blotting papers and look into Clarins and the olive oil soap.😊

Could you be using too harsh products so that your skin reacts by producing more oil?

I used to have really oily skin and I used too harsh products which made it worse. I have also had hormonal/adult acne, and I found that the Clinique Anti-Blemish range was good - the toner is harsh, so I'd give that a miss, but the moisturiser was very good for me.

I'd suggest to use a really mild cleanser - I have oily skin and I really like Cetaphil.
An oil free moisturiser that is not too harsh would probably also be good. I like ROC Hydra+, but there are many others on the market.

I have oily skin, and I use:
Cetaphil
ROC Hydra+ (or some kind of serum as I find them to work better than most moisturisers on my skin - layering serum and moisturiser is too much generally for me)
A mattifying primer is nice IMO, either alone or under makeup. But I don't always use it and don't always need it.

At night, I use a cleansing balm to remove makeup and dirt (I like Clinique Take the Day off Cleansing balm and the Body Shop Camomile Cleansing butter - they are very similar; they get all of the makeup off and do not leave a film on the skin).
Then every other night I use Alpha H Liquid Gold - this has made a massive difference for my skin, both regards to texture, spots, scars from spots and oiliness. However, it is harsh on the skin (and not cheap - I buy it when I see it on offer), so maybe you would want to try something milder (Pixi Glow Tonic is also nice) or wait until you have tried if another cleanser and moisturiser make a difference for you.

I don't find that oily skin and foundation is a bad combination - but it can be hard finding a good foundation for oily skin. I don't like full coverage and too matte foundations, and that seems to be what is generally made for oily skin.
I am currently using Clinique Anti-blemish solutions BB cream with SPF40. It's very liquid and I use 3 drops for my whole face, but I really like how it looks and how it wears. It apparently contains some of the same ingredients as the moisturiser from the same range and it is supposed to help to not break out.

No matter what you end up buying, I suggest that you ask for samples (especially if the products are a bit more expensive) as it's so annoying spending a small fortune on something that doesn't work well.

Also, some people tend to say that you need to allow for a purge period when starting with new products - a period of time where your skin gets worse before it gets better. This is a myth. If a product breaks you out, it's not right for you.

Thank you so much Carpaccio! I had meant to ask in my OPINION about Liquid Gold!
I haven't tried Clonique for about 5 years, but last time I had an awful reaction to it and ended up with a red rash, complete with tiny whitehead pimples allover my neck! It was a very, very humid summer so there's every chance it was as much to do with that as the new skincare regime. Scared to try it again though.
I was also going to ask if I should persevere with the Normaderm, but I think you are right to say it just doesn't agree with me. The scrub action feels great, but it leave I film very similar to the way your skin feels after using a cream based cleanser.
I have some Avene stuff in my away bag (little travel sized stuff) so I might switch to that straight away until I can get into town to get some samples.
