What age is too old for long hair?

I'm 41 but don't really look it. Being chunky makes me look younger! I have dark brown hair which reaches my shoulder blades/bra strap area. I have really nice, thick hair. It's a bit like Kate Middleton's. But I have been thinking of going shoulder length because it might be more flattering.

No age limit at all! Sounds like you have lovely hair.

I agree, long hair can look lovely at any age. There is a woman locally who is in her 60s. She has a sweetly pretty face and waist length white crinkly waves, she looks like an angel! So beautiful.

I don't know, my mil (68) has long hair and I think it would look so much nicer if she cut it shorter even into a bob.

At 41 you can easily still rock long hair. I'm planning on keeping mine for a good few more years (mid 40's). Maybe if and when it starts to thin out of think about going shoulder length.

Thirty-four according to my MIL Hmm

Your hair sounds beautiful. Why cut it unless you feel it is not flattering any longer? Don't get a haircut based on some arbitrary nonsense you have heard.

If you have an attractive feature, hang onto it as hard as you can I say!

No age limit if it's nice and well kept cut. One of my friends was 65 this week and still has the most beautiful bra length hair. She looks amazing.

My mum has gorgeous bra strap hair with white streaks, looks amazing. She'd look awful with short hair.

Yay! I'll struggle on for a while yet and see how I feel. Turning 41 has left me doubting my fashion choices. I'd hate my DDs to be embarrassed by me.
My mum's friend has very long hair and looks 25 from the back, and 70 from the front. Awful. Glad I'm not there yet!

I really don't understand the age limit on long hair concept. Where does it come from? Does anyone know?

I have waist length hair and am 35... Been wondering myself whether it's time to cut it short. I think I look OK for now but will probably chop it as I approach 40. It's starting to get wiry and less sleek as I get older.

No age limit. Long silvery hair looks amazing plaited or loose; know a number of women in their 70s and older who wear their hair long, and can't imagine chopping mine at some arbitrary age.

Even if she does - which I doubt - why is it awful?

No age limit for me I hope as I have really curly crazy hair which needs to be long to look anyway decent. Anything shorter than bra strap length just curls up and out and literally sticks out at a 90 degree angle. So for me, I will always have to wear it long - so much easier to keep.

No age is too old, Edith.
Look at model Daphne Self and her beautiful, long silver hair.

When it doesn't suit you anymore?
As long as it is styled to suit your face and shape and is in great condition I don't see an issue.

Why do people think hair length is related to age? Have your hair long if you like it op

I think the time to cut it is when you can either no longer be bothered to style it or it starts looking scraggy at the ends. Which to be fair is often sorted with regular trims anyway.

No limit.

I'm 54. I had short hair for many years, the. At 52 I decided to grow it. My mum went on and on at me, every time I saw her, that it aged me and wasn't right for my age. At a low ebb, I asked a friend what she thought might perk me up a bit? ..... I ended up having a crop. I hated it, immediately.

I'm now growing it again. I will not listen to anyone else's opinion in future. I like it long. I care not what age registrations others place on themselves. That's it. It's staying long. And the worst part? The "in between Bob".

OP, if you have lovely hair, leave it alone. It's your crowning glory. At any age!

lol at death!

I'm 45 with long hair and I'm leaving it long for the time being. My mother has given up telling me to get it cut. I eventually snapped had to tell her that I wasn't aiming to please women of HER generation and that women of my own generation and younger did not find my long hair inappropriate. She has finally dropped the subject.

I think (IMHO) the issue of colour is more ageing than length .

Worst is when older women dye their hair jet black, which may well have been their natural colour in their younger days but the skin tone changes and invariably with the hair texture changing, the hair ends up 'sooty'.
Not glossy at all, possibly because its left on longer (to combat grey hair which dyes differently) and it goes dull and matte.
Then the regrowth....
Similarly the un-natural plum shades are ageing. Funky on a younger head, not good on an older head.

I like long hair on any age if it's well maintained.

I cut mine much shorter in my 40s but now I'm in my 50s, I'm growing it out. It's really thick and wavy and it's bloody good hair. So I'm embracing it. I want a waist-length plait again and it's not even bra strap length yet :)

I think it depends on the hair.

My sister in law (50) has had the same hair style her whole life. Centre parting, poker straight, shoulder blade length.

It now has a lot of grey. It's a very dreary look.
