I want a leather jacket, and also not to look stupid

Right, so I am over 40. I have boobs. Am a size 12.

I don't want to look mumsy, I also don't want to look like I couldn't let go of my punk youth.

What sort of leather jacket would look OK, oh wise ones?

(p.s if relevant, i also have short blond hair and am 5'6)

Also watching with interest although have just ordered this:

In the midnight blue, I want to see how much I wear the style before spending shed loads on a real leather one.

Also over 40 (44) blonde shoulder length hair, size 10. Went for blue as often I find black to harsh with my skin tone. 5'4'

I'm looking too and I'm way older than you. I think leather is classic - it's not tied to any one era. I also find it very forgiving of my aging body because it has structure and it gives.

I think the main problem is that there only seem to be bikers around at the moment. I really like bikers and I may get one but I'm a bit pissed off at the lack of choice. The only variety is in the colour.

Me too. I ordered a biker one recently, but it had too much detail (studs, metal work) and it looked ridiculous on me. I want to look chic and Italian with my dark hair....in my dreams Grin

yes exactly Mrs9C, I want to look chic and kinda continental (Italian might be pushing it!).

That M&S jacket looks lovely and also not ££ which is great, however with the boobs and being more apple than hourglass, I think it might "box me off" and make me look a bit like a brick. A brick in a nice jacket admittedly Wink

Generally I go for things that would make my torso look a bit longer. I have wide shoulders and quite a short body.

I am 43 and have the All Saints Belvadere jacket:

cdnd.lystit.com/photos/2012/04/05/allsaints-bitter-belvedere-jacket-product-1-3161281-869604148.jpeg

Mine is in 'Bitter' which is a very dark brown. I bought mine on eBay for about half the price of a new one, and I love it. It's 'edgy' enough not to look mumsey, but not to 'rock and roll' either,

omg I love the all saints one, what are the sizes like? I've got an oasis leather one in small which fits fine, and I'm usually a 10 or an 8 (but more often a 10) in places like oasis, warehouse and dorothy perkins. I'm hoping the 10 would fit as there's one on ebay I've just spotted...

I do really like that Dave - do you think it's something you'll wear for a long time?

Yes I really love it. I think it's very classic and won't date as it isn't too 'bikery' IFYKWIM.

The colour is lovely too. I'm not a fan of black leather jackets. The bitter brown is a really lovely shade.

Size-wise, they do come up small. Mine is a size 10 an it is snug. I'm a size 8 generally, and I think the 10 is pretty teeny. If you read reviews of the Belvadere, a lot is mentioned about the fact they are smallish.

I have an AllSaints Bales and I'm a 12 with chunky arms and a DD chest. I got a 14 so I could wear with things thicker than a vest top. It's not bikery.

thanks Dave and PNGirl, very useful info. I'll see if I can find an eBay bargain as well!

I really like that one too Dave, that's the sort I was looking for last year, before I gave up on my search.

Bikerish would work for me cos I'm small and have quite a high waist. But no style suits everyone and besides, I'd like to try on some others first. I think it's really shit that the much trumpeted British high street doesn't seem to have anything else at the moment.

Sorry - I've pretty much repeated my earlier post but I'm cross. It feels like the more shops there are, the less choice we get.

I have dave's one too! Slightly different model. I think I snagged it at 30% off about five years ago - still going strong, the most gorgeous leather. Just need to lose a bit more baby weight (have 4 month old) to fit in it - maybe by the Autumn! I bought it because I saw a woman of about fifty wearing it with a gorgeous cashmere sweater and jeans and barely any makeup and she looked great.

But yes sizing is a bit neat.

I seem to say this on every thread but Massimo Dutti are great for classy leather jackets. Mango good for suede.

that is good to know ledge! I agree Floisme, masses of shops, with nothing in them I want. At least that saves money...

I have never heard of Massimo Dutti Nepotism (despite you telling everyone, all the time Wink), will go seek them out - thank you.

See, no one ever listens to me! MD is an Inditex company, the same as Zara. Classier and a bit more expensive but worth it.

It's half-price atm at £165 - has anyone got one. I can't tell if it's any better than the others that have been talked about. I've tried them on in the past but I didn't think they suited my apple shape, so decided against it.

Farfetch has the Rick Owens one on sale at 50% off. Sadly, I am not rolling in dough...

Pink. DD got a collarless one last year, the leather is extremely soft and buttery and very light to wear.

I have a grey suede biker jacket (I think it is Oasis, but a few years old now).

A lovely versatile colour, much softer than the standard black. I think it's a classic garment and goes with virtually everything.

Report
GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 18/06/2016 12:49

it is a lovely jacket, that one you've linked too Pink. Rather pricey still for me tbh, but I guess it's an "investment piece"(I hate those kinds of phrases!)

Yours sounds lovely Cointreau, though I'd worry about me and suede. I'm a bit klutzy!

Oh dear, I think I'm going to like the £165 one. Darn. But there are only bigger sizes left - what are the sizes like Nepotism? (See how we're all listening to you?!!Wink)
