Puberty has hit my nearly 14 year old with a bang - he's pretty happy with the growth spurt not so happy with the sudden faceful of spots and blackheads. Not idea where to start as I have always had dry sensitive but spot free skin :) what do you recommend for a simplify skin care routine ?

I recommend Avene - nice and gentle, not too expensive and you can buy it at Boots. It is the only thing that keeps my skin spot free and I've used it for years. They have a special range for acne prone skin which is really gentle, I would recommend the face wash or there is a starter kit if he is the type of guy who is good at using creams too.

Does he wash his face with a warm flannel atm? That alone makes a huge difference. Bit of sudacreme at night helps too.

I would definitely recommend La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo ( the 3 step box). It has turned my DD skin around, she started using all the products at first and once she got her skin under control stopped using the toner (no particular reason, but felt that the wash and Effaclar Duo cream were doing the job).
DD didn't find it at all harsh.
I got it from Boots. Have a look the reviews online.

My son uses la Roche posey too ( as do i). Just the foaming cleanser and the duo cream.

Another vote for the Roche Posay. Way better than the (admittedly cheaper) Clean & Clear type stuff.

My Ds uses (at his request) the Boots Tea Tree night gel after his shower ,
Australian Body Care Tea Tree Wash (all over)
In the morning he cleanses with a TeaTree Cleansing pad (the textured round ones , Boots)

If he has redness (usually where the spots have reduced but still a lump remains) he has the La Roche Posay anti redness cream

For proper need-to-kill breakouts, Origins (tiny bottle, IIRC a salacylic acid content) Spot Therapy.

He's drinking loads of water now which as helped immensly.

He's got one of those little metal blackhead poppers but won't use it
