Do you buy things and not wear them?

I am terrible for this and just don't know how to get past it.
I buy clothes I really like then don't wear them because I am scared of ruining them. I tend to save them for special occasions but those occasions rarely arise.
Recently I had to say goodbye to 2 beloved tops that developed holes and this has made me feel this reluctantance to wear things I really like even more intensely.
It's ridiculous! Anyone else?

I have an eBay habit. Have had a few good things but more often than not I'm disappointed and the items end up at the charity shop. I think give it up and instead if spending small amounts on something I'm not mad about and save to buy something quality I love.

I'm a bit like that sadly, like to know i have afew new things "just in case". If course when the "just in case" happens what i have is not appropriate or not as nice as i remembered.

This is totally my dm's influence though, she has 20 years old nighties, brand new, just in case she needs to spend time in hospital Hmm

you need the read the 'wear everything in my wardrobe' thread. i did it last year and its a really good way of forcing you to use all your clothes, and if you really can't bear to use some of them (too tight/tatty/awful) you know you need to get rid of them.

its also a good way of finding loads of new outfits you didn't realise you had or combinations of things that work well but out of habit you wouldn't have thought of

I do this. I either buy a size smaller as i am losing weight so whilst it almost fits its not flattering ( basically the last size for the last 2 years but ever hopeful!) or i buy clothes that i love but they arent me. I have a large collection of lovely dresses (mostly charity shop) but i wear a dress about 3 times a year. I feel like a child wearing my mums clothes. I want to be the sort of woman that does stuff whilst wearing dresses and heels with shiny hair and perfect makeup but in reality i live in jeans, converse and jumpers (sahm)

I think its a self esteem issue. Now i am getting older i am making more of an effort as i no longer have the blessing of youth and slimness on my side! Its only in the last 5 years i can carry a handbag as i never felt grown up enough - i am not that far off of 40!!

I am prone to buying stuff one year and wearing it the next -nuts eh!

Yes, I have a couple of nice things (not expensive but not for day wear) in case (hollow laughter) I go out somewhere .

I have a gorgeous blue (like a french navy) top, short sleeved, drapey cross-over front, still has the tag on .
Today , I saw a woman in a similar blue top and leggings and thought "She looks good" .
My blue top will make it's guest appearance this weekend with my jeans . Time for it to earn its keep.

I think this is easy to do, I am always buying 'nice going out tops' because I hate wearing the same things over and over, but I don't go out THAT much so they sit in my wardrobe taunting me!

Then I find I do go out for dinner or whatever and you are just sat at a table in a dark restaurant and no-one notices what you wore anyway!

I have learned to keep the tags on and if they don't get worn in a couple of weeks back they go. I find if you really love something you usually want to wear it ASAP, whereas stuff you aren't that bothered about gets overlooked time and time again.

I used to end up saving things for best, then not getting enough wear out of them before they end up looking dated or buying other similar substitute items not quite as nice or expensive and wearing them instead Hmm .
I've learned to just get on and wear them asap now and I don't buy half so much stuff and all the nice stuff gets worn to death, as it should

I currently have a few items in my wardrobe that haven't been worn yet. I kind of do this frequently but do make myself get round to wearing them eventually. The problem is not me keeping them for best [ i tend to wear the item then take it off when i come home so it doesn't get stained] but i have lots of clothes and simply don't get round to wearing them! I also am not in a rush to wear all my new things. I do love most things i have. I also tend to wear the same things over and over again as i don't feel like wearing something new on that particular day.

I also dont like to wear lots of new things because people pass judgment/make comments 'oh another new dress' or ' is that a new pair of shoes' and that bugs the hell out of me [ mostly my mum who does this though].

I read an interesting blog post the other day where the blogger was talking about building a capsule wardrobe - I don't want to do that, but one thing resonated with me, which was to create a pie-chart of how you spend your time, and your clothes should match that. I work full time, wear pyjama type stuff in the house, and there are only two weekend days, yet I loathe buying work clothes. I tend to buy things "for weekends" and eventually relegate them to my work wardrobe, but in reality I should spend more on workwear. Not sure how relevant that is here, it's just been in my head.

Judy dream - I understand your point.

I wear everything as I do not have masses of clothes. Some of my clothes span back to 6/7 years. As a result my wardrobe has no theme either by colour or style. I dislike mixing old with new as I never look up to the minute. As I only buy one or two garments a month I do not manage to recreate my wardrobe - ever!

I have never known what it is like to buy a dress/top/coat and leave them hanging in the wardrobe with the tags.

All the time, tbh if I buy something and haven't worn it within the first few weeks then I probably won't ever wear it. Though that doesn't stop me from keeping hold of it for at least a couple of years with the tags still on, just in case I may someday decide to Grin

I'm the age old person whose jobs in past 6 years have been smart/smart casual. So I have lots of dresses that can be worn both ways.

In fact I wish and will try to do this more often to wear more of my smart work dresses and jackets and leave the other stuff at home. In fact at times I wish we did have a uniform so we couldn't deviate from it. In super smart city jobs it's less of a problem because smart work dresses, jackets and suits are essential for every day and rarely deviated from and also more expensive items (eg Hobbs suit) does earn its keep.

I have some very pretty/smart work tops (sleeveless) from oasis and one I found still had its tag on! The other (sale item) similar top I've worn but shoved it away. Same with a pretty dark grey and black sleeveless cat dress, shoved away somewhere but the cream star print sleeveless dress still has its tags! Wearability I suppose?!
