Can you wash suede yourself?

Or is it best to have it drycleaned? I have inherited a suede coat that has been in storage and needs a good wash.
I haven't asked the drycleaners but I understand it's very expensive.
Not used to suede so a bit clueless!

Phew, you only wrote this ten mins ago......

Ask at the dry cleaners. Some will clean it but IME they are cautious about dealing with suede items.

You can buy suede cleaner, I buy mine at the cobblers (yes, I still use a cobblers!) that comes in a spray.

You lightly brush the material, spray the cleaner on, leave for a while and then give it another brush. Or something like that, instructions will be on the bottle.

You may also want to get some suede protector spray for afterwards. Protects against dirt, water etc.

Depending on the colour of the garment - you can also buy suede renovating spray which hides and stains or imperfections.

Suede looks fabulous but is a pain to clean. Never wash it.

I haven't tried washing it, but I have a lovely suede skirt which could really do with cleaning. The dry cleaners wanted £40 and would have to send it away and said it would take about 6 weeks. I read a blog where someone said that suede is absolutely fine on a cool wash. I've just not plucked up the courage to do it yet.

I washed an expensive for me suede handbag a week or two ago. It came out fine. Didn't shrink or lose shape. Phew!

I have machine washed a suede jacket which came out fine - and of course I regularly machine wash my UGGs
