Dress code for boys first Communion... Pls advise

My DS is making his first holy communion next week. I've bought him a navy suit, light blue tie and navy shirt with white spots. He looks great.

I've checked the dress code we were sent and it's says smart trousers, shirt and tie, jacket optional.

However, my mum is furious about the spotty shirt. Is it acceptable? I don't know what to do. He loves it and he looks v smart. Also, his jacket is likely to be closed so you will only see a bit of it. The dress code doesn't mention the colour of shirt.

Advice pls!

sounds gorgeous and very smart. navy is always smart I think and he is a boy not working in the corporate world so it sounds perfect.

Thanks wobbly... Have you been to a communion in recent years? I haven't so although it's smart, I'm not sure if it's appropriate. I've not been to one since my own!!

The suit and shirt sound perfect. Our church always wear red ties. I thought only churches associated with Mary wore blue. Perhaps just check about the tie. Do you have a parish nun or could you ask the person who has helped with their communion preparations?

When my DD did it, the boys had to wear a white shirt. Everything else was optional (jacket etc.).

The girls were asked to wear a predominantly white dress (ivory fine).

Can you call the catechist to ask?

So he's complying with the dress code? Why is your mum furious, and what has it got to do with her anyway? I'm Catholic and certainly wouldn't be tutting from the pews Grin.

It sounds perfect and completely in keeping with the dress code.

My DS made his last year (grey suit, red waistcoat and cravat with a white shirt) but there were boys wearing a huge range of (equally smart) outfits. Kilts, navy suits, white suits, blue shirts, white shirts, spots, stripes, checks etc, etc. They all looked brilliant.

If your DS looks smart and comfortable then that's all that matters.

Sounds perfect. Our priest told my brother he could wear his football shirt if he wanted!! Not helpful.

It sounds great, and esp so if he likes it. Ignore mum and enjoy the special day Smile

Our church asks for boys to wear a red tie (think this may be because the school colours are red and the school is next door to the church - so VERY close connections) - apart from that your ds suit sounds lovely. Tell your mum to butt out

I've been to four FHC in the last few years ( nieces and nephews ) and one thing I learned to my cost was that the adults are very dressed up.

I turned up at the first one in smart linen trousers , wedge sandals and a pretty blouse ( it was a hot day and the church was packed ) . All the other female family members were in full wedding type regalia - short dresses and jackets , sky high heels and matching bags and a serious amount of tan, make up , nails and hair . Some even had fascinators .

I was Blush

Sorry I cannot comment on outfits for the children as the priest at that church nsisted that they wear their school uniforms , as he was fed up with the very ostentatious outfits / limos etc which he felt took away from the spiritual meaning of the event .

Grin at Kr1stina. I usually find that the extravagance of the adults outfits is inversely proportional to the amount of times they attend Mass.

Krisskross, Ds2's first communion is in a weeks time. Dress code is simply a white shirt, dark trousers and the red sash and tie. I would think your ds will be fine.

I think white shirt for holy communion. Girls wouldn't wear a spotty dress. Sorry, but just my opinion.

Thanks all....we don't do the red tie. I will try to speak to a catechist (I've a white shirt in reserve) .... Don't want him to stand out and don't want a week of grief. Also don't Want to change it because my mum tells me to. Aaaaaa

Mine had to wear a white shirt possibly as the girls wore white dresses?

ShelaghTurner · 14/05/2016 08:23

We've got ours this weekend and they can wear what they like as long as there's white. So the girls have all opted for the dress and the boys seem to be wearing suits with white shirts and they have a special tie that's been ordered through the church although that's optional.

And I'm wearing linen trousers and a nice top. Everyone else can feck off. It's dd1's day not mine.

It sounds perfect for a FHC. Here in Scotland it's become more traditional for boys to wear kilts, my ds will probably wear one for his next year.

Yes although the blue shirt sounds lovely and I wouldn't be horrified I'd maybe opt for a white one just cos I think that's what every one else will be wearing. Maybe he could change in to the blue one for the party if he's got his heart set on it and your having a party?

The navy suit sounds gorgeous
