Style and beauty

People of S&B, I need your help on 80s style!

I would never normally frequent this board, I have no style (except my own!) or beauty!! Grin I'm sort of embarrassed to be posting here tbh. Blush
But......
I have been invited to the birthday party of a vv dear friend of mine. For various reasons we haven't spent any time together really for about 4 years, and I am incredibly excited about being able to go.
It's an 80s night at a club, and I really want to get into the swing of things and join in with the dressing up, but I have several things I can't get my head around.
1)I would like to go 80s, but still keep elements of my own style, which is crusty/punk/hippy.
2)I can't do anything with my hair, I have nearly skinhead type sides and dreadlocks in the middle, so it is totally un-stylable.
3) I have a limited budget
4) I only have a week!

So not to drip feed, I have looked online, but all I can find is full on Cyndi Lauper type looks, and that is really not going to work!

Any ideas?
Was thinking New Romantic look, but everything I have found that would work is so expensive!

Please help me find a look/anything that would work.
I wouldn't normally care this much, but everyone else will be v dressed up for the theme, and she's such a good mate, I really want to join in, but not lose "me" IYSWIM? Blush

Meant to add I am aware there were punks and hippies in the 80s, it's just I wanted a more recognisable style, but still sort of alternative. Which is why I was thinking New Romantic, but my brain has totally collapsed, and I was hoping some style aficionados would have some great ideas/sources of 80s type things.

The proper 80s goth look is a thing of wonder. MIght that work, maybe with a wig?

Report
BadDoGooder · 30/04/2016 20:22

Ah full on goth, I hadn't thought of that, which is stupid, because I was one ffs, though in the 90s! Grin
Soooo 80s goth,
long black skirt, dms, what on top?
I have a long black dress, no dms, but I do have army boots. Seems a bit, well, tame by my standards IYKWIM?
Frilly shirt? Too far/not right?
Would make up (I love dramatic make up btw) make it more dramatic?

Black dress is one of those sort of "body con" ones that were popular, but I cut a thigh slit in the skirt, would work with something over it, as it's very fitted.

you are overthinking this WAY too much.

Ripped fishnet tights or hooped stripes ones, purple and black!

Lots of Indian cotton gypsyy tops iirc. Goths were more hippy and loose, it was 80s Rock chicks who were in skin tight velvet and Lycra.

this dress would get you a long way, I think.

Army boots good. Expected no less. Leather jacket you have I suppose?

It's all in the makeup though really isn't it, if you have the skills for that and the attitude then your there and A.N.other black clothing will do. Surely?

Jack probably, but I haven't been on a "proper" night out for years, and I know for a fact that the people I'm going with will be incredibly dressed, and I really want to join in!
They wouldn't care if I turned up in a bin bag, but I want to give it a sense of occasion, whch I never get the chance to do.

Plus I like dressing up in the drama sense, I don't do heels or dresses,so finding a fun outfit gives it a "special" feel. Smile

From the description of your hair, I'm thinking Boy Georgeish - bandana tied round/ribbony things, bold make up

Why would Cyndi Lauper look not work? She had shaved colourful hair.

That dress would need pulling up onto the shoulders but is a very 80's shape. I think goth was more baggy than tight back then, could be wrong. But, yeah, as I said with the right make up and goth soul you'll be fine in whatever clothes.

Cocole unfair of me to lay it on Cyndi Lauper, first name I came up with, sorry! Blush
What I meant was, a lot of what I came up with was full on neon leg warmers, silly skirts and stuff, that's just not me!
Wanted alternative but still recognisably 80s looks IYSWIM?

Both those pics are great, bottom one more me, but I love the look of the top one as well, might combine a bit of both.
V dramatic make up, heavy brows, army boots, floaty skirt, will try and find a black gypsy top I think.

Yay!
