jacket to wear with jeans? any suggestions please?

At work I tend to wear dresses & a jacket (easiest option as I'm not a keen shopper). I live in jeans when I'm not working, mostly with a hoodie or jumper & Rab type jacket.
It is really time for me to smarten up occasionally. I have lots of shirts and thin jumpers that I'd love to wear with a jacket....but what jacket?
I'm 5'7", size 10-12, 40 years old and in reasonable shape.
I feel that bomber jackets are too much of an 80s throwback for me, not sure about bikers. I'm thinking about a reasonably neutral colour to go with as much of my existing clothes as possible.
Any pointers at things to look at would be hugely appreciated.

A nice blazer or leather jacket?

I have a grey leather biker jacket from All Saints that's my go-to jacket for wearing with jeans.

Have you tried Zara? Usually a good choice of jackets.

I'd look at:
Knitted jersey blazers in a neutral black, grey, or navy (Whistles do good ones)
Khaki cotton like this www.hush-uk.com/womenswear/daywear/jackets/military_jacket_khaki.htm
A Chanel style collarless boxy jacket in a tweed or boucle: www.next.co.uk/x572066s6#113239
You said not a biker, but a plainer leather version without all the hardware: www.allsaints.com/women/leathers/allsaints-bales-biker/?colour=5&category=25 or maybe in a charcoal or grey to be less severe
Military style in a navy or khaki

i'm personally not keen on Zara for quality and their current styles are a bit too trend led for me, but they do produce tons of different styles so would be a good place to experiment under one roof. Take a few different tops of your own, shirts with collars will need a different jacket to a t-shirt, for example.

I'd go with a leather/suede biker jacket and a blazer. I've had a jersey blazer from Uniqlo previously that was very good. Oasis do similar though.

PS you could wear a blazer to work too - I tend to go for the ones with 3/4 sleeves if they are predominantly for weekend wear though

Interested in this thread - I really REALLY want a good navy blazer having finally found the perfect white shirt (from Benetton).

A friend mentioned she saw a gorgeous coral coloured blazer in Dorothy Perkins that she got to wear with jeans

Thanks for all the thoughts so far.
I'm not keen on the blazer as it feels a bit too formal for me, I'm looking through all the others, I'll let you know.
Zara & H&M are my go-to places for work jackets, not found anything more casual that I like there- yet!

Swimster, thank you, I think I may try a blazer and a biker.
Uniqlo was not on my look-list, I have popped a few things in a basket to try.
All saints, hmmm, lovely, but expensive to commit to in case I really cannot hack it and return to the world of expedition clothing!

The All Saints biker, like all my links, were just examples as you didn't specify budget. There will be plenty of pleather options around the £30 mark if you wanted to test the waters with a biker jacket. How about this one instead:

www.dorothyperkins.com/en/dpuk/product/clothing-203535/jackets-coats-4102031/black-collarless-stitch-jacket-4576681?bi=0&ps=20

Gap would be another place to look for jackets to go with jeans, but search for a discount code first. They have some utility jackets in a few colours and a navy linen blazer you might like.

Have you considered a trench coat?

Charity shops are worth a look if you want to try out a style without spending big bucks. I favour velvet jackets of various types and tend to get them from charity shops - it makes me feel more relaxed about wearing them everyday.

margharita it's just a bog standard white long sleeved shirt from Benetton. £20 last week - it's not got a pocket & has just the right amount of stretch in it & barely needs ironic when dry. I think I'm in love!

Sorry for hijack.

I haven't fond my ideal spring jacket either. I think I would like one like the Hush one but with some definition at the waist. The annoying thing is that I have such a thing in my wardrobe but it is a bit past it now.

Got this today www.joules.com/Women/Jackets-Coats/Olivia/Single-Breasted-Herringbone-Jersey-Blazer/Pale-Pink-Herringbone?id=U_OLIVIA%7CPPNKHRB

I'm not totally convinced by it so it may yet go back. They had it in navy & grey too. They grey was nice but the navy wasn't. The pink is sold out everywhere but has been pulled from the shop floor as they are in 'summer an' range. So shops do still have them, just in the stock room.

Also saw a very nice blue blazer in Esprit but not in my size. & also another in Gant but it had gold buttons. Wasn't keen on the buttons & for £200 I wouldn't want to have to switch them out.
