Quick - help please. At hairdresser and can't decide what to do with my hair.

Having highlights put in but they'll be out in half hour and then I'll need to tell him what to do with my hair. Stuck in a constant cycle of cutting it short and then growing it long. Never really worked out what suits me. Am hopeless at spending any time on it so needs to be low-maintenance.

Here's a photo taken last week that kind of illustrates the problem. Didn't know what to do with it so it was kind of half up, half down, weird sprouty bits at side and back.

Hair is quite fine but thick IYSWIM, and dead straight so gets a bit heavy when it's grown properly long. I suspect not a good look 'cos I'm quite pointy (increasingly so as I get older) so can look a bit winny the witch.

Am a MN regular by the way, just name changing for photo in order not to out myself in RL.

Right, here goes, will try and upload a pic. Thanks in advance for your help people - much appreciated.

Meant to say, generally have a fringe but it grows out really fast, as in this pic, so would appreciate thoughts on that too

I would grow it a bit longer and grow out the fringe but beyond that I'm useless!

Hey, can't see enough of why up have to make a judgment, and I can see kinks so it's not poker straight from what I can see

Can't see enough of what you have that meant to say

I'd flick through some of the magazines there to get some ideas.

Ok, this one's a bit blurry but gives more of a sense of current length

Or what about something like this - Michelle Williams cut? Girl at my work got it and it looks lovely although hers is maybe a bit longer.

Grow it to a long bob, for now get a trim then have the hairdresser straighten it and give it a glossing treatment?

imperial that's what I'd planned to do but they are all super 'styled'. There aren't really any examples of normal person hair in the mags here

nospring I love that hair but not sure I'm brave enough. Will give it some thought in the remaining few mins

Who's hair do you love? For instance, I love the way Ruth Wilson has her hair and so I asked my hairdresser to do it like that. Your hair could easily be grown out into a shaggy layered bob - add some salt spray and voila! But that's just an example. Who's look do you admire? Could you do something similar.

I'm going to try and attach a pic of Ruth Wilson, just in case she inspires you too. We'll see if it works ...

Person at work who got it had it a bit longer and it still looked good. I know what you mean about being brave but your photos look lovely - you could carry it!

My battery is running low so will prob get cut off but thanks v much for the food for thought. It has helped :)

juneau quite like Tilda swinton's trademark look but again not sure I'm brave enough. Hey ho, will make a last-min decision once my hair's been washed.

Thanks again people

Jury still out. DH likes it, DD1 prefers it 'in the middle', I'm not sure - like the feel of it being so short though. Not a fan of selfies, never sure where you're meant to look, but for what it's worth, here's the finished product. Thanks for the advice!
