I thinks the reason she looks so good is because she looks so happy and content with herself. She's an inspiration.

I love the colour of her hair but I've always liked her with shorter hair ( the first Prime Suspect , loved her hair then)

There's a huge difference between her now and the L'Oreal facecream adverts , but don't know when they were filmed (she had a blonde bob).
Was there photoshopping or had she spent the day in the salon with clever lighting?

So - she's ageing gracefully, looks a bit dehydrated maybe.

That has cheered me up no end.

I don't think my personality is going to let me fade into 'age-appropriate' clothing/behaviour - and I need more Helen Mirren's around to ensure I don't look like an eccentric.

For what it's worth, I am also massively cheered by the fact that a lot of 'women in rock' are performing/re-forming after having had initial success two or three decades ago.

We're going to live, and work, for quite a while. I think we have to accept the fact that the sexist idea of fading into old age would mean being self-effacing for twenty/thirty years. It's a bizarre idea: a kind of ideal of feminine demureness that is foisted on older women after it has been thoroughlly shattered for the sexist nonsense it is. Yet we are supposed to meekly sign up for it, after we have lived (some kind of) liberation.

I know that the above ideas are not new - I remember reading this stuff as a student some 30 years ago - but they are very, very tenacious.

Looking at that picture also makes me realise how much a woman's sexuality is something that matters. It is, for good or ill, tied to a sense of self, to visibility, to life-presence. I know that I, for one, have always been quite critical of that link, but I think it's interesting, and quite crucial when it comes to thinking about women and ageing.

Anyway, I like that picture. I also read a bit of a biography of Ian Dury and Helen Mirren does come across as someone who is a splash of petit-grain and orange blossom in the world.

Good for Helen. I think the best thing about that photo is the big grin on her face.
That's the way to deal with ageing - laugh about it.

I was just logging in to say she hasn't had children!

She's had more than one face lift, so not ageing that gracefully - her jawline is tighter now than it was in her Prime Suspect days.

I thought she was in costume for a role? anyway, yes, I think she looks great too. She is 10 years older than me and it gives me such hope.
These pictures are all that needs to be posted in rsponse to those silly silly questions "Am I too old to wear......?" Age in years never has anything at all to do with it.

You do all know she has had 2 face lifts and a neck lift- s o not exactly ageing gracefully. DM has loads of before and after pics as well as one of her with a headscarf and badages round her neck.

she looks a bloody mess in that photo now I've clicked on the link. Ok she can wear leather trousers, but does she look good? Not imo, no.

What thecatfromjapan said.

Even though it's in costume, great look.

Well if she's had a face lift it hasn't got rid of crows feet, forehead lines and numerous wrinkles BUT she looks great; happy, confident and engaged with life. Much better than many of her contemporaries with faces immobilised by fillers.

MsBojangles · 02/04/2016 16:48

Facelifts are for sagging skin not lines and wrinkles.

Report
Floisme · 02/04/2016 17:29

Oh I agree she's probably had work done. No-one gets to 70 with a jawline that tight.

Report
PollyPerky · 02/04/2016 17:42

maybe she looks happy and content and engaged with life because she's -
-on camera , on a set, and she's an actress so can turn on the smiles

  • she is working (as above)
  • she is vain and knows the pics will be around the world in no time.

She's not a youthful looking 70 year old, I've seen better - women without face lifts (as far as we know)- Joanna Lumley, Twiggy (not far off 70) Sandra Howard (former model older than HM), .....

Floisme · 02/04/2016 17:48

No, she's not youthful looking but that's kind of why I like her. She makes 70 look like it could be fun.

Report
PollyPerky · 02/04/2016 18:10

Why shouldn't 70 NOT be fun?
It's not that old these days.

Thinking life ends at 60 or whatever is an ageist attitude.

Course it helps if you are still working and a millionaire.

Report
Floisme · 02/04/2016 18:25

Why would I think that? I'm 60 myself in a few months. I'm realistic though - some of my friends are already dead or in poor health. I don't think it's ageist to think I haven't got all day any more and that I need to make the most of whatever time I have left.

So getting back to Helen Mirren, I like to see women who - that jawline aside - look their age and still look good. And I like it even better if they look like they're having a good time.

I find her insufferably smug, sorry.

Goodness Flo- you are 59FGS! That's nothing! You have probably got another 30 years.
I'm older than you and my mum has friends in their late 80s who still 'rock'!

Thank you and I hope I have too Grin I just know a few too many people who thought the same and didn't make it. It makes me very conscious that time is passing and that I need to get a move on.
