Solutions to trousers gaping at the back

I've recently lost some weight so went off to buy new trousers. Fitting nicely into size 14s on my thighs/bum/hips but they all gape horribly at the back. I have very large thighs and bum, hips 14inches wider than waist so I suspect this is the problem. I've always had this problem at every size (I just don't wear trousers usually- but I'd really like to). Belts just seem to cause bunching at the back.

Does any brand make trousers for the hourglass/pear shaped woman? Is this something a seamstress could deal with?

In short, no, I don't think there's a make of trews for those of us with fine hips. But yes, your local friendly seamstress can help.
Or, a belt. I always wear a belt. I won't buy trousers without belt loops. I get what you mean by bunching tho. I don't mind it much.
I sometimes buy trews that sit lower than my waist, then the bunching isn't so bad. I still wear a belt tho. I find Gap good.

Take them to a seamstress it's a really common alteration. I used to sell top end designer clothes and would often do this for clients. We used to call it having a hollow back, lots of people are the same.

Thanks John, I like to think I have a small waist rather than giant hips and thighs (clearly deluded!). I know I should try harder with belts, they just never seem to sit right. And I can only buy so many fit and flare dresses before it feels like a uniform.

I have the same issue OP and now only buy trousers from Dorothy Perkins as they're the only ones that fit properly without the gaping

I have a 12inch difference and clothes made for Europeans to be a better fit. Stereotypically (very stereotypically and with no intention to offend), Bristish women are bigger around the tum rather that being more hour glass so clothes aren't aimed for your figure. I find Kookai trousers to be a great for! Also,Oasis jeans (Eva) are snug in the waist with room for a bum.

I have this problem and spent a considerable small fortune on trousers over many years to find the perfect ones. They were J Crew Campbell trousers. Next best fit was Banana Republic Martin trousers, then a U.S. company called Ann Taylor and then Gap. The J Crew ones are expensive but are perfect, the Gap ones are a good dupe.

Blingy I actually got the most amazing cropped trousers when in America a few years ago in Ann Taylor- I had completely forgotten. They fit me like a glove. Then I got pregnant and fat. I must dig them out and see if I can squeeze into them now! Jaim- I agree that most clothes here seem to be made for an apple shape. I'll take a look in Kookai. I haven't been there in years, they had a concession in Dublin and I went as a teenager (9 stone, 5ft4 at the time) and a horrible shop assistant told me that it was unlikely any of the trousers would get past my knees. So I never went back.

I wear my trousers quite lose and sitting on my hips rather than waist. I wear a long vest if there's danger of "builders bum".

Gosh I had forgotten those Banana Republic Martin trees. They are v good for our shape. Leg is a bit unfashionable tho. Shame. Although maybe they have a new leg shape? Will scoot off to look!

I wish shops labelled clothes as best for certain body shapes. For those of us who have no idea how to dress. I think I need a personal shopper once I get to goal weight.

Rinceoir, glad you knew Ann Taylor!! I work in the U.S. a lot so as you see my recommendations were all US retailers. I only moved on from the Ann Taylor because the material was a bit thin (think I bought in summer). They do now deliver here though that's a brave option.

John Cheese, yes I moved on from the Martin trousers because of the style. They do still sell them though! Mine are lurking in the back of the wardrobe to spring out when they are ultra fashionable style again.Smile

I'm also a hollow backed hourglass.

I find that high waisted styles usually fit me well - especially the high waisted wide legged styles that are coming back in now, worn with a very fitted top to avoid looking dumpy though.

it's an easy alteration. Either take in the back seam or a small dart either side of the back seam.
