Tinted moisturisers: What kind of coverage do they give?

I have a problem with skin discolouration. To make the skin on my face more uniform I've tried different foundations but, they leave my skin dry, dewy/wet/shiny, or it looks caked.

I'm thinking of switching to a tinted moisturiser, but I'm not sure if it'll be too light to even out the discolouration and if I layer it will it have the same cakiness as the foundation?

Any advice would be appreciated Smile

Feck all, usually.

Tbh I think they're a bit of a waste of money as you can just mix foundation with moisturiser 50/50 on the back of your hand and you have the same product. Actually if you have foundation left over I'd try that before buying anything else.

The only one I really rate is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser. It's buildable and for me doesn't dry my skin out, go patchy or indeed go shiny. I've tried quite a few. I can't get on with foundation at all anymore. The Boots Botanics tinted moisturiser was quite good but quite thick and the colour wasn't right on me. The Nars one also quite good but I preferred Laura Mercier. It lasts me ages and is the only "expensive" thing in my otherwise low budget make up bag Grin

I don't like heavy coverage but have some hyper pigmentation so I just use a good concealer on the red areas and a light foundation everywhere else where I don't really need the coverage. This avoids the caked look. I go really shiny with any foundation after a couple of hours too if I don't use a primer underneath so maybe try that?

I use Nivea light bb cream. It is very good at helping my skin look more even. I used to swear by no7 intelligent colour but the last tube I had was very different and made me very red and patchy. I then used benefit but I much prefer the Nivea.

I hate the much lauded Laura Mercia TM. It is awful on me. Patchy, colours aren't right for me, lid leaks, wrong texture... You name it. This is for both the matte and normal version.

I like the Nars TM, it's on the heavier end of the scale and has great colour range.

My favourite is the Stilla CC cream. Not a huge amount of cover but definitely my skin but better, especially if I use a bit of concealer.

I like the olay bb tinted moisturiser for a quick face & neck once-over then apply foundation under eyes & t-zone. I have also created my own by mixing moisturiser and foundation in the past which has the advantage of being able to adjust to suit your skin but is slightly more faff.

I heard the new Bourjois City Radiance is good.

I use tinted moisturiser when my skin is too good (smooth, not spotty) for needing foundation heavy moisturiser. I sometimes use concealer underneath to fix redness or under eye dark circles. I like it, much lighter. I use a cheap one compared to some here. No. 7 triple protection, works great for me. These days I use a primer underneath as well. Benefit pore perfector. It doesn't have a colour to it (although you can get primer with a yellow tint to counter redness...can't remember which brand it was but I came across it in Debenhams) but it smooths your skin out so your concealer/tinted moisturiser/foundation goes on better.

I second the nars one. It is buildable too and good for my sensitive skin

Laura Mercier TM is it for me, the only one I'd ever contemplate exchanging it for is the Chantecaille one. Some get on well with Bourjois CC 1-2-3, I found it a little high coverage for my tastes.

The coverage with a TM is simply to even out skin tone, if I ever find myself needing a bit more coverage I add in a drop or two of foundation (great way to use up a dud and/or change the colour if you tan), though you can easily build up the LM TM too. In general I can't get on with foundations, my dehydrated skin sucks the moisture out and I am left looking extremely dry or cakey. A primer helps but I prefer the look and feel of a TM, I never wanted that high coverage look and I doubt a TM will ever achieve that.

A TM is pretty undetectable, a lot of foundations claim to do the 'your skin but better' look but I've only ever seen that achieved with TM and good skin to begin with. It won't cover things like melasma or angry red pimples but I tend to be a little red around the cheeks and nose and it evens that out well without giving that 'dead' look of foundations.

Like Paddington mentioned it lasts forever, you get more and mine last for 6-9 months with daily use. The only thing, despite the name, don't mistake it for a replacement for actual moisturiser, it'll do a lousy job as that.
