Help! Changing shoe colour

I bought a pair of Chelsea boots online a couple of weeks ago. They were advertised as burgundy leather and while I normally go for black shoes (I wear a lot of black upon black) I decided to be a bit more exciting and get the coloured version. However they're not burgundy (which they did generally looked it on the pic on my screen) as much rich chocolate brown. I've worn them now and while I'm happy with the fit and style the colour is just not my style (and goes with nothing I own). I was thinking of getting some shoe polish to try to change the colour, but don't know if I'd be better off with black polish to cover it up (would black polish even be able to do that or would the brown show through? Sad) or burgundy as a closer/better match? Help please!
