Alexa Chung is not my cup of tea and I am not sure how successful her picks from their fashion archives will be for us mere mortals with lumps and bumps, other than to get them coverage in the fashion press. However, I was thinking why don't they ask us, the general public, what we would like to have available on the shop floor. Airfix, a bit different I know, but popped up on a retro hobby discussion elsewhere, has asked model makers to vote on which kit they would like revived and, when they have sufficient pre-orders, then produce the item, which is already pre-sold, so a win-win.

So, would it not be in M&S's interest to ask us what we would like to see again. Me, flat fronted trousers from an Italian ladies range, about 18-20 years ago, wonderfully flattering, stylish straights, with a wool mix slight stretch fabric. They came in black and navy, front slip pockets, so no gapping at sides, washed brilliantly and would fit in my wardrobe now.

What would you like them to re-issue?

A pale turquoise pencil skirt suit in Italian wool from 1997 that I bought in M&S when I lived in Hong Kong. My first work suit and I wish I hadn't left it behind because my suitcase was too full.

I also had some fabulous navy heels that year which would be in again and a great matching skirt and top. Lovely Autograph stuff from when they used nice fabrics.

Possibly the same vintage Debs.

Not clothing but a fantastic mascara I bought around 2003.

The Marion Foale knitted jackets from the 1990s. In pure wool this time.

The blue leather low wedges/flats from when they very first started doing shoes in the 1980s.

Really lovely autograph tights from about a decade ago. Lovely un-tighty material, lovely fit and washed beautifully.

Some Limited Collection leggings I bought in 2007 and have only just gone at the knees. I doubt their replacements will last even half as long.

Lambzig, it does sound like we are harking back to the glory days of M&S some 20 years ago! Maybe they should find out who worked for them at that time and bring them back.

Cerseirys Fri 05-Feb-16 16:18:43

Oh and a pair of white wedge sandals that are a dead ringer for a brown pair I bought from Aerosoles in the US 10 years ago. Would love to have them in black too.

TolpuddleFarter Fri 05-Feb-16 16:24:42

I had a pair of black, skinny cords from M and S a couple of years ago. Got a big hole in them. Now discontinued. I want them back!!

Moogdroog Fri 05-Feb-16 16:25:25

I love this idea! Might send DSis, who works in M&S marketing, a link to the thread

Moondroog, please do! I'd love to have them carry a range of quality clothing basics again and they have it all to hand. They just need to stop believing in hype and rewind to quality with function, clothing that fits, flatters and behaves when worn in real life and not simply looks good on a blog.

A pair of mid-blue chintz culottes circa 1982. I loved them. And the simple short-sleeved linen blouses they did in around 1993.

And if they could re- make the lovely Autograph cashmere & silk jumper I bought last year that DH sadly shrank, I'd be ever so grateful.

SeaRabbit Fri 05-Feb-16 16:49:32

And the Orly Kiely mid blue Autograph handbag with red Velcro fastening from about 15 years ago. It's been much admired, and I still use it but the Velcro's lost its stickiness, so a smart new one would be nice.

Autograph started with such promise, but now it's generally classical stuff in polyester. Apart from my lovely jumper that is.

An A line wool skirt, knee length, black bought circa 1999. It got compliments every time I wore it. I shrunk it washing on too high a heat and was devastated still am, I was talking to DH about it yesterday

Their cashmere range from about 2000-2001. Wonderful quality, brilliant colours, nicely cut.

niminypiminy Fri 05-Feb-16 16:55:34

Betty Jackson t shirts from the first Autograph collection.

(There's a theme emerging here. I still have a black felt A-line skirt by Sonja Nuttall from that collection, beautifully cut and made, I'll be wearing it forever.)

Woodhill Fri 05-Feb-16 16:57:39

the brazillian silk knickers from last years' collection not the skimpy ones from this season.

The almond shampoo from the late 80s - lovely

the sandals with velcro straps which worked with my narrow feet in nubuck leather

the white cotton camisole from 1992 with buttons up the back and was fitted which I wore to death.

loads of other stuff such as plain cotton scoop neck t-shirts

cord skirts

Autograph and Limited used to do brilliant silk dresses.
Limited used to do really perfect cotton t-shirts, plain and striped, in a range of lengths and sleeve lengths and with a bit of lycra.
And Autograph Weekend used to have some really good things.

Woodhill Fri 05-Feb-16 16:59:32

and the wrap dresses in cherry and blue jersey which were lovely and the cardigans in mohair around 1989-1190.

Glitteryfrog Fri 05-Feb-16 17:09:45

The first wave of limited collection before it went wierd - ten years ago?
I was too poor to buy it at the time.

FrustratedFrugal Fri 05-Feb-16 17:13:05

I remember when black t shirts from M&S were featured in Vogue <must have been the 1990s>

ivykaty44 Fri 05-Feb-16 17:16:27

Thing is back in the 9s clothing was still made in UK and had some quality, now though they couldn't reproduce the clothing as its cheaply made in Asia

A perfume, Formula (IIRC) first in a flat oval frosted glass bottle, then repackaged in a frosted glass tubular bottle. Loved it.
And the Formula body scrub and wash (I've tried the newer ones, different fragrance)

The cotton long sleeved jumpers- pastel shades. I had pink, it was soft, beautiful colour, washed well.

Some leggings- grey with a fine brown and even finer white pinstripe.

I remember shopping in there with my mum & my grandmother about 20 years ago - my mum used to get a lot of her work clothes from there, mix & match suits, lovely silk blouses and wool coats. Really nice classic stuff that wasn't ridiculously expensive. I used to love helping her pick clothes, and I always used to think that when I was grown up I would buy clothes from there too like they did - my grandmother had a lot of Marks clothes too - but unfortunately that isn't the case as it is just so hit & miss.
