Any recommendations? I've got a birthday coming up and am wondering whether to ask for a new bag. Have been looking at the sale stuff on Peony & Moore, Yoshi etc. I like those. I don't like Radley or anything too formal or blingy. Something that is a bit timeless, soft leather and casual-ish rather than very stiff and office-like. Nothing too fashiony would be good as I'm not really into bags and tend to use one for everything and don't want to have to replace it too soon! I think a tote or cross shoulder bag would suit my needs. Any websites to try outside of the usual department stores, TK Maxx etc?

I have one that meets this description from White Stuff. It is a few years old so they won't have the same one, but worth a look.

i have a gorgeous leather one from Joules that would fit the bill. Might still be available, let me have a quick google.

Gah, doesn't seem it is, it's called 'lycett' and I use it every single day, love it. Big enough to fit various tat in, not too formal but still looks smart and classic

I have the pliage in two different sizes and colours, and it's undoubtedly useful, but actually I don't love it. I tend to keep them folded in another bag on a day out to put the children's various crap in that I inevitably end up carrying. Ridiculously light weight though, and pack up incredibly small.

I've found my White Stuff one, the "Collette" here just to give you an idea of their bags.

I like the Joules brand except foe their branding on the side. Not keen on the white stuff and gusti bags.

Any experience of Dune bags??

I wasn't at keen in the label either, but I think it'd be very easy to snip off, I've been contemplating doing it to mine as it seems to have been stitched in as a bit of an afterthought.

I was coming on here to suggest Enny, then thought I hadn't seen one for sale in ages, and just discovered they closed down 13 years ago. Apparently they occasionally appear on Ebay. They are the most beautiful bags, very simple, exquisitely made from top quality leather and very rarely counterfeited, and as such are the perfect all purpose everyday bag. Very sorry to hear the company couldn't compete with the tidal wave of tat coming from Asia, or the lust for bling. I shall look after the two I own even more carefully now.

Russell and Bromley?

Plenty on eBay for 30-80 quid and probably retail for double that.

I love my Le Pliage. Light and easy to carry, you can fit loads in if you need to as well. They wear well - my DD has been using one as a school bag for 3 years now and you have to look very closely to spot any signs of wear.

Paddington which Peony & Moore one do you like? I love Le Pliage as well, although have recently seen them on 12yr olds as school wear and its now put me off! Grin

It's a family member that will be buying so Peony and Moore is out of budget sadly! I have settled on the Le Pliage as a good all rounder for my life and not £££!

Possibly a bit late now if you have made up your mind on Le Pliage but Tuscany Leather has quite a good selection of leather handbags. The bag and leather quality is very good.

Having a change of heart!

Think I really want a leather bag now. Got given cash as present anyway so can increase my budget and add some money to it.

Still not sure what to get. Are the heavily discounted bags on TK Maxx a real bargain, or not?

I love my Fossil tote bag. Soft leather and is lasting well. Mine is a different colour and slightly smaller than these ones (didn't get it in the UK) but they do lovely bags.

Hmm Fossil. Never looked at their bags before, for some reason I thought they would do canvas style frumpy bags.

I do like some of their Emerson satchel range

This is the third time in two days that I have recommend Longchamp Le Pliage.

If you can add quite a lot of money to the original £100 Mulberry have their summer sale on. It’s a really good sale with £100s of pounds discounted. They have beautiful classic bags in classic colors and like LVs (in my opinion), the older they get the better they look. They last a lifetime, I’ve got some that are approx 15 years old and they look just as good, if not better, than when I first purchased them.
Instead of buying cheaper bags more frequently, I splash out on one from the sale every couple of years. So far I have only had one that wasn’t from the sale that DH bought me for my 50th.
