Can you be a ginger Winter?

I love the idea of colour analysis, but I look like death warmed over in camel and pretty much all pastel shades, in spite of being a blue-ish-eyed, blonde-eyebrowed ginger.

I look good (I think) in raspberry/hot pink and pure white and pine green, and when I wear foundation it's Bare Minerals in Fair (which is their lightest colour, and a cool-toned one, I believe), which is the only foundation which doesn't make me look strangely orange.

So...is skin tone more important than hair colour when it comes to what looks good on you? And can you be a ginger winter?

I guess it depends on what shade of ginger. I would wear what suits you regardless of what season you are supposed to be.

Hypothetically possible, albeit unusual. I've never seen one (I do colour analysis) but I know colleagues who have.

I have very reddish chestnut hair and I'm a summer if that's helpful?

I've never had my colours analysed and am shocked to see you suggesting that you have been told to wear pastels. I'm a pale ginger- maybe more strawberry blond these days- and never wear pastels. I look awful in them. I need strong or dark colours.

No doubt you would look impeccable in camel etc but you don't like it. Perhaps you have a personality and or like a bit of colour that clashes with your 'season' who gives a shiney shite.

Camel makes me look like I'm recovering from a violent stomach bug, which is a shame as I hear it's good for making you look expensive Grin. "Reanimated corpse" is probably not an expensive look though...

Obviously it's good to wear the colours that suit, but I only really see that in restrospect (like that off-white polo neck I bought two months ago, went well with the coppery hair but rather more poorly with my skin, ah well) so I like looking at colour palettes. Especially if it means less time spent shopping.

Thanks for the help!

[off to muse on the possibility of navy blue, against which I have previously had a severe school uniform based bias]

I have quite light ginger hair, and my two daughters have exactly the same colour hair as me but a totally different skin tone. I have typically pale pink toned skin and they are both more olive like their dad. I think skin tone is more important when choosing colours than hair colour.

I've got mid ginger hair.
I look great in hot pink, the right shade of red, all the jewel colours, maroon, khaki, grey, navy. I thought these were classic red head colours?
I look terrible in pastels - except baby blue which is boardering on OK.

I'm a redhead with pink-toned skin. I had my colours done years ago and I was a (soft?) Summer. Same as you, there is a strong raspberry pink that suits me, a particular red (not an orange-based red) and a blue. Unfortunately, I lost the colour chart and wish I could get another one.

Fiztim, look on eBay for replacement charts.

I'm an autumn but don't like most of the colours, orange, teal BUT I do look good in them..& I can wear camel which I never thought poss. There's a shade of camel for everyone !

I have dark red hair and v pale skin and freckles and was for years following the idea that autumnal colours would suit me. Not a chance, I have cool toned skin, suit black, white, jewel tones, grey etc, anything brown, camel etc makes me look like death on a stick. Makeup wise I suit raspberry colours, red and pink blush etc, almost v snow white style.

hollinnhurst84 you have the most amazing skin. Wish mine were that clear. Do all you red heads have a shade of green that suits you, or is that a myth? Perhaps that is the place to start. If you suit khakis you are warm, if you suit emeralds, you are cool?

I'm a strawberry blonde. I can't wear pastels either. That lovely pastel pink that was around a year ago made me look like a corpse as well. It literally drained the colour out of me.

I look good in strong colours, red, green, blue, purple but never yellow. I also look really great in white and I love black.

I do suit green, not sure what shade though! I need an honest friend Grin

The colours you describe are suitable for an Autumn.

You are probably a spring. Lots of clear, bright, warm toned colours in the spring palette.

Try bright coral/apricot shades, teal, turquoise, hot pink, - all bright colours with a warm/golden undertone. There are some lovely blue and green shades that go with the coral pinks.

Most foundations are orange based - it is really difficult to get one that isn't if you are quite pale.

I am a washed out summer and really struggle to find a decent foundation. I just wear a light BB cream these days, it's easier.

Couple of non orange foundations I like (I need not yellow undertones)
Revlon colour stay (the palest one!)
Illamasqua skin base 002
Urban decay naked skin 0.5 (this is a little darker)

Have you tried Korean bb creams? No orange in the lightest ones. You can get them on eBay.

Let me see if I can post a picture...
(Any white bits in my hair are snow not dandruff, honest!)

3littlefrogs, what BB cream do you wear?

Nyancat, good point about the blush. I had a pinky shade which I wore to death and now I'm in the wrong country to replace it. They don't have Boots No.7 over here, I'll have to wait for a visit home. Boo.

Osiris Lidl or Amazon. www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_15?url=search-alias%3Dbeauty&field-keywords=osiris%20bb%20cream&sprefix=osiris%20bb%20cream%2Caps%2C156&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

The lightest one.

From your picture I would say you are a spring. Difficult to work out how "ginger" your hair really is though. Colours are difficult in photos.

Ooh yes forgot the Korean ones. I have dollish veil vita in purple and it's lovely

Hair colour is a bear in photos.

I once sent one of those passport booth photos to the driving license people and the me on my actual license had dark brown hair and blue (really truly light blue) skin. Clearly someone was having a bad day with the automatic colour corrector. Or maybe they just hate gingers. Either way it was pretty funny. Mind you, skin tone isn't so easy either...I have a YouTube channel and I swear I have different hair and skin tones in every video.

Though having just been going through photos, I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter what colours I wear, I just need to get the guy who did our wedding photos to follow me around taking pictures, because then I'd look fabulous in anything. Grin

Thank you for the links!

I know someone who is a spring and has red hair - she looks good in bright blue, coral, turquoise, purple and apple green but terrible in white and camel (although some springs can wear beige). Bright navy and light grey are great neutrals for springs. Some springs are able to wear both silver and gold jewellery.
