Anyone been doing this? (For those that don't know it's swilling coconut oil in your mouth for 20 mins on an empty stomach every morning). It's pretty gross, I've been doing it for a week..not sure if I'm seeing any results yet. Also never know whether to do it before or after my morning coffee...hmm

I do it. After breakfast because I figure why do all your dental care then eat? I don't buy into the whole teeth whitening thing but it has definitely improved my gum health. I have a certain part of my gum that tends to bleed with flossing and brushing. Doesn't when I oil pull regularly.

Yeah that's what I thought but all the instructions I've read say to do it with an empty stomach.

That's good it's Improved your gums, mine don't bleed but are prone to receding so I hope it can help with that.

Hmm I was really young the whitening thing would be true!!

I'm pretty sure this has absolutely no scientific basis at all and doesn't do anything except taste vile.

I'd agree with Apologies. From what I'd read it's the swirling that does the cleaning, not the oil, so you can do it with bog-standard tap water and have the same result. Bit cheaper as well.

How do you do it?

bruffin Tue 12-Jan-16 10:29:26

The did some research and there is no difference between water and using oil.

PippinMcGriffin Tue 12-Jan-16 13:46:46

WHAT. So my DH referring to it as "snake oil" was right then. angry

I do it because I enjoy it (any oil will do though not just coconut) it just makes my mouth feel cleaner and it seems to loosen debris more easily than water for me, I hate flossing, have close teeth and eat a lot of meat and nuts that get stuck. I make no miracle claims but I will carry on as I like it.

Eurythmol toothpaste stopped my gums bleeding. And it's not rank. grin

It's complete bollocjs, I'm afraid.

KoalaDownUnder Tue 12-Jan-16 15:01:23

Bollocks, even!

TheGreenNinja Tue 12-Jan-16 15:11:21

Agree, have also seen a study comparing oil pulling against the same actions using pure water and they had the same results. It's the swishing that works, not the oil.

mintbiscuit Tue 12-Jan-16 15:51:58

I always thought it was the antibacterial properties of the oil that helped?! But if I can do it with water and get same results.

Not totally convinced by results of one study though. I might conduct my own!

The propertues ofCoconut oil is a marketing myth.
