A thread for apples and the non- waisters

Thought I would start this one off as it is such an irritating shape to dress. I will pop down stuff that has worked for me. I am short (5.3 and 1/2 🙂) and between a size 12 - 14 depending on the cut. I have never had a waist and my hip bone and rib cage virtually touch. I have a broad ribcage which is another consideration.

Anyhoo would love to hear fellow apples best buys of late. Here's mine....

  1. swing dip hem vest from Next. Really flattering and will be excellent in the summer. I sized down to a 10 to get a more flattering line.

2)cigarette jeans from Next. Sized down to a 12. Great cut and they don't stretch too much.

  2. relaxed skinny jeans. Next again. Size 12. So comfortable and great to roll up.

  1. Next cotton shirt dress. Cotton that isn't stiff. 14 is most flattering

  2. Boohoo jumper dress. Nice casual dress. Flattering and cheap. I got a size m.

  3. Boden off duty jumper in a size small.

  1. Jaeger three button coat. Size 14. Could have got away with a 12 but it drapes well.

  2. John Lewis capsule grey jumper dress.

  3. Jigsaw navy slouchy cashmere jumper. Size m.

Ooh lurking.

I own one item from Next , a pair of Slim'n'Lift jeans.

They're a 12 , but I cannot wear them without a belt, they migrate south after an hour.

Love the Bodum top but it'd have to be a smaller neck or I'd cook. Grin

I will join! I am a classic apple, a size 14 and with broad shoulders and ribs!

Most recent discovery has been a gentle tulip shaped elastic waist skirt- so comfy! Got one on the laura ashley sale a few weeks ago but best was bought in Sainsburys a few months ago.

V neck tops and shirts work well for me. I have a couple of thick cotton short empire dresses that i wear with boots that are great.I find dressipi invaluable for recommendations. Not bought much recently so don't have too much to link but watching with interest.

I'm in, I'm a classic apple. Have recently bought several items from Warehouse - really quite impressed with the cut of their stuff.

Oops wrong one-that's from Jigsaw and I took it back as it had monkey arms on me!

My actual one is a richer colour. and a sixth of the price

Ooh I saw loads of stuff on there when browsing that looked great. How does Warehouse generally size?

Crevice I've found Warehouse tops, dresses and skirts true to size, jackets I'd size down. The quality is really quite good for the price and I've never bought from there before thinking it was too young for me (I'm late 40s), but most of it is pretty classic.

Ooh, I like the Navy jumper.

I've not seen anything worth buying since before Christmas. Everything's moved into horrible, unflattering spring colours. I'm a winter, ffs! i don't do apricot and beige!

I bought this jacket recently which works well - it's cropped so finishes top of hip (my smallest point I think!) so my bum not covered and the front disguises my tummy. If that makes sense!

I have that shirt too, which I prefer tucked in but that doesn't look too great at the moment with my Christmas podge

I love M&S 5 pocket jeggings too in black, they fade badly but dye back again well. High waisted and comfy.

Bill- great look. I have tended to vary between cropped lengths and 3/4 so it misses out the middle bit. I love my cropped denim jacket worn over a t-shirt straight cut black maxi dress for example. Also cropped cardigans work better as long as they aren't waisted.

One thing I have personally found is that it is better to avoid 'clever' draping/pleats/rouching etc contrary to the advice given by various 'stylists' over the years. For me straight cut is MUCH better as is slightly oversized rectangular clothes. You can't force a waist if you don't have one so better to emphasis elsewhere to my mind.

Also wrap styles are dodgy and DO NOT create a waist- just an obvious signpost to what isn't there.

Totally agree re wearing unfussy non-waisted items. Wraps just look awful!!

Empire dresses create shape for me too, as can really structured fit and flare dresses if its a stiff fabric, such as really thick cotton (and only when I am slimmer).

Also longer vests layered beneath shorter looser tops are good, though that may be because i am a long rectangle rather than an apple!

Jeans that sit below the 'waist' only. Otherwise they strangle and cause discomfort and wind.

Poncho sweaters are just the best!!! And cape style jackets.

I like ¾ length sleeves on tops - since most tops are forming a big rectangular shape it helps reduce the overall impression of being a breeze block on legs...

Wow, that's me and I never heard anyone else mention that before. This idea that we all have a waist is just not true, not even when I am skinny (which I havent been for a long time).

Great thread. Smile

Majorre I agree with lots of your recommendations, you're spot on re 3/4 length sleeves.

Where can I look for poncho sweaters?

All the Becca Batwing tops in Phase Eight are great for apples www.phase-eight.com/search?keywords=Becca

But they don't last very long, mind you I machine wash stuff regardless so that's probably why.

I always like to show wrists and ankles off because they are thinner bits of me and indicate some shape 😄 I have noticed if I wear longer boots my legs take on a very cankly look unless they are fitted around the ankle. Over the knee flat boots look better I find.

Another tip is to wear a padded balconette bra so clothes drape off the norks and skim past the middle section.

I wore the John Lewis dress today with Next dark jeggings and Whistles heeled tan boots because I am a short arse and needed a bit of height today. I must say that Next jeans/jeggings are more fitted this year than previous years but they are good quality and they haven't bagged or done a droopy crutch thing. I needed a 14p in them. Any smaller and I would have been in overstuffed sausage territory. Photo- I am not a great photographer but thought it might indicate what I am banging on about....

My most recent poncho purchases have been in the sales, from Gerry Weber and The White Company. Sounds decadent but I made a decision to buy a small number of things that are good quality as my wardrobe was mostly bare - and totally devoid of flattering items, never mind outfits!

There is also a stunning cape jacket in the Reiss sale, which looked elegant on (neutral colour, hung well, looked 'expensive', as per other thread) but I couldn't justify it (it is expensive), though once its gone I will probably regret that!

This is such a heartening thread. Will be referring back for ideas to complete my mini-overhaul!

I have indeed had some success in Phase Eight-good call. I bought a coatigan and an asymmetric coat and several longer tops. All good quality and very flattering.
