Mummy your hair is brown😟

As a child/teen I had blonde hair, I had it highlighted intermittently in my 20s but haven't since well before I had DC1. Consequently my hair is an attractive shade of mouse, although in my head it remains blonde

DC told me I had brown hair today, so that has spurred me into thinking I ought to go for highlights again but I'm reluctant to splurge on salon prices.

Can anyone recommend a home highlighting kit that won't turn my hair orange? The last time I dyed my hair at home was about 15 yrs ago

Dyes nowadays are pretty good, I used to love dying my hair. Not so much now I sport the typical deeply in the 30s male look of bald.

Still, I do do my GF hair still and she loves the Loreal Glam Highlights.
She had really bright blonde hair when he was younger, its turned darker as she's gotten older. She's now more or less a brunette but she likes a highlight put through every now and then.
It comes with like a fork with bristles, its pretty good.

ouryve it's not and I didn't mean any offence! It's just the image I have of me in my head is with blonde hair and instead I have a nondescript shade of mouse, which for me, is not what I want.
I don't think my 3yo know that mouse is a colour, hence the use of brown

Its certainly better than grey!! I've had grey hair since I turned 24! because your hair is mousey as apposed to dark brown (which mine predominantly is) going blonde ^should be relatively easy with an at home kit. I like garnier nutrisse (sp?)

My hair did that too so I know how you feel. I used home kits for years and the best advice I can give you is, don't do it. When I see myself now in old photos I cringe at my highlights. They look bloody awful.

I used several brands over the years but I'd particularly like to name and shame Nice & Easy and Sun-in. I don't know whether they still make either of them but if they do, step away right now.

My advice: either shell out to have it done properly which, quite apart from the expense, means hours of your life literally going down the plughone. Or leave it as it is.

The good news is that it will turn again and blonde/mousey hair often goes that really nice silvery grey.

Do what you like re hair colour but there is nowt wrong with brown hair!

Mine is mousey too, or 'mucky blonde' - I would quite happily have brown hair but mine is something in between

I get mine high lighted at the hairdressers every 3-4 months but I used to do it myself and found all the home kits were fine (L'oreal etc) but you really need someone to help, I could never manage without a willing friend

I use garner nutrisse in the dark blonde colour - it's similar enough to match the colour my hair naturally goes in the sun.

If you want highlights go to a hairdresser. If you want a home colour go brunette.

what colour eyes do you have? can really make eyes stand out if you go darker, rather than lighter

Fake blonde hair doesn't have to age you, it can look amazing in fact. DIY blonde hair always looks a bit crap though.

You should get it done at a hair dresser. It's an investment. And highlights last ages.

Find a freelance hairdresser who will come to your house. It will be cheaper as the salon won't be taking a cut.

You only need half a head of highlights.

Do you have a local college nearby that does hair & beauty? Mine has ridiculously cheap prices, and all the students are supervised - and if anything goes wrong, there's a tutor there who can sort it out for you.

I'm enjoying the loreal bronde kits. They're subtle but not too subtle- ie it lifts the colour- and easy to do.

Thanks for all the replies. I have ridiculously pale, almost non-existent eyebrows, so think going brunette would look weird!

It's easy enough to tint eyebrows too! Personally I've never seen at home highlights look good. I dye my own hair with salon colours but an all over only. I'd suggest going to a richer glossy brown or a red rather than blond though as I think blond tends to need to have multiple tones ie it needs highlights! Natural blondes tend to have several shades whereas brunettes are often one colour.

Second going to local college, they can be excellent and super cheap.
I have used a home highlight kit, but just used it for a couple of streaks underneath. I wouldn't trust using one to do proper highlights. If you can afford to go to a college/salon to have it done, maybe get them to not do the top of the head as then the regrowth will not be so obvious and you can leave it a bit longer between go's.

I'm exactly the same as you with the mouse brown hair! I've tried:

At home all over colour dye (fine in my twenties, but for some reason the last time I tried it post having children my hair went ginger, despite buying light blonde colour?!
At home highlight kit: looked like a stripey badger.
Highlights at the salon £120 plus, especially when I had waist length hair when younger, and actually really hit and miss in terms of results.
Mobile hairdresser: by far the best option! I paid £35 for a T section, asked for ash blond and bleach highlights and they were great! Far quicker than the salon, convenient, and I had her leave me to take the foils out and rinse my hair, which meant I could carry on with day to day life while the colour developed. Perfect!

I'm the same. Was blonde for years. Best colour I've found is to go for a sort of warm brown. I'm still blonde in my head though.
