Black ball dress

I am going to a ball next weekend, very excited and I haven't got a dress yet, was thinkin of a black dress, no idea of what style to go for.

I'm 5 foot 4, size 10-12 with slim legs but a big tummy for my sins!

Don't really want to spend more than £100 as unlikely to wear it again.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Dress hire? I have done this for balls, and if you are anywhere with a good hire company (I was in Notting Hill at the time) you should find something way nicer than anythiing you could buy for the same money.

Dress hire can be fantastic. I hired an amazing dress for a very smart ball in Scotland. I would never have worn it again (white ball dress) so could justify hiring a really high end designer dress.

What sort of ball is it? Safer to err on the side of caution if you aren't sure how formal it is and go long. If you have fab legs try and find a dress with a split up the side for a flash of thigh - it will detract attention from your tummy and stop you looking swamped in a long dress. If the ball is less formal then a cocktail dress may be ok.

It's a dinner and a dance night at a local hotel, so maybe ball gown is the wrong word but evening floor length gown smile

I never thought about hiring will look in to that. Can probably pay more but as I am unlikely to wear the dress again seems a bit of a waste smile

This is nice - and a bit of a bargain grin

Beautiful dress - you may need to get it shortened though or wear high shoes smile,100&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=36&sort=2&clr=Black&totalstyles=214&gridsize=3

To show a little leg grin,100&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=204&sort=2&clr=Blackgold&totalstyles=214&gridsize=3

This has great ruffles around tummy area to hide any bumps and a split to show off legs and lovely sleeves!

Try trawling charity shops if you've got time. I end up going to 2 or 3 dinner dance things a year and I've got some gorgeous charity shop numbers. The most I've paid has been £10!

KateSpade - why do you say the bit about needing heels? I'm a similar height but can't see anything on the website about the length (but maybe I'm being blind!). I really like the dress - might be a good Christmas party option, but your comment about the length worries me!

slev I suppose I really mean for all of them - I’m same height as OP and I don’t think I could buy a maxi off the rack and wear it with flats without having it shortened. I have a few maxi dresses and have to wear them all with wedges or heels.

It is a stunning dress isn’t it?
