Coat guidance needed

What type of coat/jacket is best for casual wear with skirts/ dresses? As a guide I'm short, slightly plump and middle aged I have in mind a below bum length black pea coat type thing but can't find anything like this. Everything I have tried is either is too long, too voluminous or is not a neutral winter colour. Any suggestions greatly appreciated although I dont live anywhere near a big shopping centre so may need to rely on websites.
